I say that because all over the country the spread offense is running rough shod over defenses. I know our two DC's have no clue. I'm anxious to see what the defensive genuis, Saban, comes up with against Florida.

I think I'd pull out the LB's and replace them with safetys. The spread has made the traditional LB useless...........too slow to cover RB out of the backfield, to slow to cover the slot receivers, too slow to cover the TE dragging over the middle, too slow to plug the holes for a Demps or Raines, too slow to handle the option, to slow to blitz and run down the QB.

I think you have a better shot with 7 DB's. The spread has turned the traditional LB into dinosaurs.

I think you keep 1 or 2 LBs in there, if for no other reason than to occupy blockers. Also, I'd rather have a LB spying Tebow than a safety

But yeah, less size, more speed, and you HAVE to be able to solo tackle in the open field. If you're relying on gang tacking, you're fricked.

Pretty much agree! I think you need to big 2 DT's and 2 speed rushers! After that go to a nickel or dime defense and play PRESS coverage! You've got to disrupt the timing passes!

I think you throw the read and react out the window and start destroying options. If you take stuff away, eventually you'll stop the drive.

Be aggressive.

Hell, if you can answer this question with a good, non obvious response, you can probably get a job coaching somewhere.... Have better athletes and guess right on wr routes.

If the defense is athletic as ours, pressure the QB constantly (good solo tacking applies, of course).

i say load the secondary but keep one (yes, one) LB on the QB in case he decides to run.

The amount of time that QB had in the pocket tonight was crazy.

my point exactly. even if he doesn't want to run, tell the LB to rush anyway to pressure into throwing way downfield off his back foot, which is a prime target for a pick.

There are a lot of variables in that question. Are you asking about what alignment would work or what package? If you have athletic/fast enough backers you can run a 4-4. But thats asking a bit much and you would put your corners out on an island a lot. The best is going to be a cover 2 or nickel package.. running out of a 3-4 but then again everyone has to know what their assignments are.

Go with 3 Cbs, 3 Safeties, 3 Linemen and 2 Lbs. That beats the spread!

yeah but if you run a dime you are going to give up a 5-10 yards rushing every play

Holding by offensive lineman and wide receivers needs to be enforced. Maybe hands need to be brought back into the body. Also, this starting the cadence then stopping and the whole unit looks over to the bench might need to stop.
Defenses always catch up, and usually when defenses start to dominate it gets evened up by legislation ie; extending the arms during blocking, etc. Maybe this time it needs to be the opposite.
Other than this, when the O-line takes those huge splits, keep your D-line in and jail break the QB a couple plays and he won't be in the game very long.

No quick answer to this question.

First, lots of different forms of a "spread" offense being run. The Spurrier, Tiller, Mumme spread is not like the one that Rich Rod, or Urban Myer runs, or the one T Franklin was trying to run at Auburn.

I fall in line with Saban in where I think regardless of what the offense is trying to do, you disrupt them. Penetration, QB pressure, and physical play on receivers that disrupt their routes stalls drives.

I dont get to see film on LSU, but from what I see live and on TV it looks like they have been abused in certain matchups. Teams are getting a safety covering a receiver and a LB covering a TE too often.

To me this defense looks reactive rather than pro-active

Very well said! Disrupt the timing of the spread and maintain discipline with containment while rushing the QB! A team with VERY fast, physical corners can defend the spread, and I think this is why Patrick Peterson will be All-american and help LSU win the SEC in 2010.
