I think the point would be that if someone is making fun of them for having a mullet, or if they are LSU fans holding "Fear the Mullet" signs...well the joke is on them, not the players.
These guys with mullet wigs and signs look retarded because nobody on LSU has a mullet. How is this not making sense to you Mick?

Right. A mullet has as much to do with being short on top as being long in back. True mullets are fairly spikey on top. RR and CC just have long hair.

A mullet is short on the top and long in the back. Also called business in the front/party in the back, the sho-lo, the 10/90, the Mississippi Mudflap, the Missouri Compromise, the Kentucky Waterfall, etc.
Neither Cotton nor Rhymes have a mullet. Their hair is long all over. It just looks mulletesque while wearing a baseball cap.
