Dean had zero involvement in hiring Saban. Absolutly no power.

That was how I remember it. Dean's professional grave was being dug by then.

Mack Brown who was still at UNC then was the hottest name at the time was the top call in show choice for sure. He had ties to LSU (OC under Stovall) and coached at Tulane and rumors had it was very interested in the job. Unfortunately he was going to cost 400-500K/year and Joe Dean was not going to pay. Dean's top target was Pat Sullivan for Auburn Heisman winner then HC at TCU. I believe they even agreed to a deal but TCU wouldn't let him leave and or LSU wouldn't pay his buyout so Dean went with his next choice Gerry
i remembered hearing the name bobby ross tossed around, he was the chargers head coach at the time

I'll never forget the picture of Joe Dean sitting in a chair somewhere with a WTF look on his face.

I think it was the PC when somebody asked Emmerret what were his instructions on Dean & he said, "Don't negotiate. Ask how much is it gonna take."

Mack Brown was simply not interested in the HC job at LSU. I made the call for LSU to Mack (Mack's former wife used to work for me in BTR). Mack said he had a better job. I called LSU and told them about my conversation.

I live in Nashville so I told them about Dinardo and then they hired him about two weeks later.

A few years later Mack left UNC for Texas.

Didn't LSU beat Vanderbilt 66-0 the last year Dinardo coached at Vandy?

NM - Tennessee beat them 65 - 0

Because a school like LSU should never ever ever hire an interim head coach oh wait

Dabo Sweeney was an interim. That turned out pretty well for Clemson.
