Saban was interviewed after his win against Tennessee and asked why he played his true freshman quarterback the entire second half. His answer was that he felt like he wanted his freshman quarterback to experience the flow of an SEC game, good or bad. In Tua's first series he threw a 95 yard pick six. Bama was only up 28 to 7 at that time. Saban did not pull Tua, he allowed him to play the rest of the second half at which he drove the team to score 17 points in that time to win 45 to 7. When the press asked Saban why did you allow Tua to continue to play as a freshman having just thrown a pick six, Saban's answer was "I was not about to pull my freshman quarterback after he threw an interception, that is how you ruined the confidence of a young man and your future QB." Wow, I found that to be a very interesting perspective and certainly shows a difference in coaching philosophies. Saban just might be very successful some day if he keeps thinking like that..

Coach O did the same thing with Brennan when he reinserted him earlier in the year after an Int. Saban is a great Coach but please don't come here with he is a good QB developer. He has had more 5 star QB's transfer than most schools have signed in their history. Tua was the #1 rated QB for a reason, Saban knows he is good and one Int won't rattle him. That and his defense could beat Tennessee without the offense taking another snap.

I honestly think "O" would like to do the same....but coach "O" and Saban are in completely different situations right now. What team have we gone up 28-7 on before half?
We don't have the depth on defense to be so confident that we wont let a team come back even if we did have a huge lead at half.

Saban had zero chance of losing that game. Zero. It wasn't a huge gamble at all to leave Tua out there and definitely doesn't make him some sort of savant. If the score in our game is tied going into the 4th quarter (like last year) there isn't a chance in hell you'll see Tua in the game.

This just in, when you're up 4 TDs and then up only 3, you can still leave a 5-star freshman QB in and see if he can make plays.

Saban has the easiest job in the country right now. He out talents everyone by a large margin he's playing and on top of that every game has been a blowout fairly early on or they have been in complete control still (FSU)

When you're in that scenario, you do whatever the hell you want with some freshmen.

The differences between our situation and Bama's are pretty stark, honestly.

Saban knows if he played his freshman and his offense stalled out because of it, his defense would carry them. He also knew if the freshman really mucked things up, he has Hurts who could go in and right the ship.

LSU doesn't have a Hurts. Brennan needs his reps, but we can't wake the training wheels off yet.

Some posters on here just cant get Saban's you know what out of there mouths. This is the same "QB Developer" that played Josh Booty over Rohan Davey and Marcus Randall over Jamarcus Russell. Managing QB's is probably the man's only weakness as a Coach.

If you think Saban would have left said freshman QB in if it were a 1 possession game you are an idiot.

In any event, Saban is a better coach than Orgeron. Is that the point you were trying to make?

Why are some of you so hell bent on trying to compare O to Saban? It's no comparison. One is, arguably, the greatest college coach to ever walk this planet and the other is O.

Get ahold of yourself man.

The difference is that Coach O gives his backup QB time to play in realistic situations (not up by 20+ points) while the game is on the line against opposing defenses who are challenging the starter, so if the basis for comparison is level of commitment to the freshman QB: I, too, admire that O appears to show more confidence in next season's starter than Saban does (while maintaining dedication to Etling).

Alabama was up 21-0 at half and 28-0 when Tua took his first snap. Tennessee's only points came on a 95 someodd yard pick six on Tua's first drive (where he did look good before that throw).

But to add to your thread, I did like the move from Saban. Tennessee had a zero percent chance of coming back in the game. We have yet to play in an SEC game this season where that was the case.

I understand what you're trying to say, but pulling a guy after throwing a pick (that resulted in a touchdown as well) while trailing by 17 to Troy with 8 minutes left is a slightly different situation

This isn't exactly apples to apples.

Anyone that coaches here is going to be compared to Saban.

One could make a similar argument by saying it was TROY, for God sakes.. at that time in the game no one really believed that we would lose to TROY. Whether they were up by two touchdowns or not. This coupled with the fact that our backup quarterback was the only one that moved the ball up to that point of the game and the only one that scored at TD up to that point of the game makes it stand to reason that he had every bit as good of a chance to come back as DE did. But our coach decided to pull our freshman quarterback for the second time this year immediately following a mistake. I'm just saying it's obvious the coaching philosophies are different. And I don't care whether Tua is a five star a four star or a two star I promise you the skill set and skill level of the two quarterbacks in question are one in the same. PERIOD! I Have seen them compete side by side numerous times..

Well put.. and some merit here.. but why not put him back in for one play to just hand the ball off and then pull him instead of having him dwell on the mistake of his last snap week after week. Just sayin.. there is a difference in coaching philosophy

QBs are not developed, they either have it or they don't. They can gain more experience.

Saban is trying to keep Tua from transferring because Hurts has 2 more years left.

Will Tua stay to start for 1 season?
