I'm looking at this team with nation high shutouts and a solid bullpen (most of season). Also with below average hitting playing thier way into postseason.

Last season UCLA had horrible team BA, but great pitching and solid defense and won it all.

Question is, did we play for Omaha this year and copy a recipe of defending champ and forget trying to compete for SEC title? OR did the season just work itself out like this?

No. We're nothing like the UCLA team. Our defense isn't that good, we're not as fundamental as them and our pitching isn't nowhere near as good outside Nola. If you want to call us a poor man's UCLA team last year, I guess. I think our hitting is better than UCLA last year but everything else is worse. Hopefully our bats stay hot because we could win Omaha with what we have with hot bats.

This, a lot of hitters are not as good as last year. Hopefully they stay hot.

Wait, are you saying that we tried to be bad at hitting the ball?

Not at all. But you can't deny we tried to manufacture runs all year. Hit and runs. Aggressive base running. Bunts. That's not playing for the big inning. Thats giving away outs. Its a different philosophy.

UCLA was 3 deep with their starters last year and all 3 were pretty much studs. Their relief was also fairly ridiculous compared to what we have this year. I'm not seeing the comparisons. We have a good bullpen but it's not where UCLA was last year...

Not saying we are the equal of defending champs. But they didnt rely on hitting.Neither to we.

Are we playing for 4 run games and hoping our young arms on the mound can come through? Bunts instead of swing away? Hit and run instead of pulling it down the line?

UCLA's pitching staff was nasty last year.

Outside of Nola we have a freshman on the mound for Saturday and a shaky "Johnny Bullpen".

True. Not trying to say we are better than the champs.

But a lot of people were bitching that we didnt "play for Omaha" last season bc of big park. This year seems like we have been preparing all season.

Can't deny the aggressive base running and more "small ball"... I hate that term.

Unfortunately, we may never get to Omaha bc SEC doesn't lend itself to play that way. And a super host is clutch.

What makes you think that? Because they can't hold every team to 2 runs when our offense can only score 1 or 2? This bullpen has been amazing.

True. Brett Laxson was worthless in postseason too.
