Detiller - "season opener. Any concerns there" "No question. When you have

a change in defensive scheme you will have some hiccups early on."

But Dave Aranda has never had this type of speed and athleticism on any defense he has coached. He will take advantage of that. But to answer the question, early on there will be some mental errors. Football is a game of errors, but it is about overcoming the errors and playing hard on each snap. Hustle and speed to the ball sometimes can cover up an assignment error.

in the three November losses to Alabama, Ole Miss, and Arkansas, LSU gave up 701 yards rushing on 126 carries. That’s basically over 5-and-a-half yards per rush, and Ole Miss is not considered a great rushing team. LSU gave up a total of 1,475 yards rushing all season and 701 came against 3 teams in November

Very high praise for Key and White. That said, I tend to agree with the comments about Key. Thought not as much or as often, he was the first true freshman defender since Mathieu to really stand out to me when he was on the field.
You could tell there were many times he had no clue what in the hell he was doing out there. But whatever it was, he was busting his arse to try to do it. With more coaching and experience, that guy could by himself change the entire approach of opposing offenses.

Key is not the "key" to LSU stopping the running game of the teams that have awesome running attacks. and that usually includes Wisconsin but you know who in the SEC i'm talking about.
Saban beats Miles with Miles own gameplan. wear down the front 7 and cram it down their throat. ditto with Arky.
there are two keys to beating those teams...
1) slowing their running attack. and having
enough rotation to stay fresh in the middle
2) our friggin offense scoring some friggin
points and keeping the ball long enough
to rest our D.
if we try the same ole, same ole against Bama, we are doomed to fail (once again). to win the west, we MUST change our tendencies.

Or we could get bigger, stronger and tougher.

I can't help but think the guys will pick up Arranda's D faster because it is action based, not reactive. He calls for his defenders to attack the Offense in a manner that confuses opposing players and dictates how they play the game. Seems easier to learn than a ton of reads where you may need to back off of blitzing and instead drop into coverage in a split second.

This is why we MUST release the Kraken!!!! All 350lbs of Valentine in the middle. There will be nowhere to run, nowhere to hide! Get him eligible now! Ride for the Kraken!!!!

I agree with you, and it begs the question: Does the LSU strength & conditioning program need a shake-up?
I really don't know, but 10 years ago, we were consistently the biggest, strongest and meanest son of a bitch in the valley. In the last couple or three seasons, that seems to have slipped. Especially regarding the OL & DL.
GEAUX TIGERS!!!!!

Yaw yaw is well on his way to fixing that.

It'll be a much closer game with Wisky than people will want, bc they'll be fired up for the home crowd and it'll be first game with new DC and new scheme.
But speed and talent on our side I think will give us a narrow margin win, with our D continuing to become dominant as the year goes on.

bama was 18 for 24 with an 8 yard average on completed passes. It's called a short to intermediate passing game which they perfected throughout the season. Until Miles does this, we'll be watching the playoffs from home.

well, considering bama went for 250 and arky went for 300, ole miss rushed for 150. which yes, is troubling considering half of it came from swag kelly, but still a full 100 yards short of the damage that bama did and half of what arky did.
the offense against ole miss was horrid. heres the first half
punt
missed FG
punt
punt
punt
INT
TD
fumble
TL;DR - i dont think its fair to lump the ole miss game in with arky and bama.

I know I probably state the obvious, but the key to beating those teams is to have a competent passing game that actually puts fear into the opposition. I think the recruits of the last few classes shows that Miles is at least attempting to find the receiving personnel that can do this. Now, if only Harris can perfect his accuracy.

In so many ways, Godchaux reminds me a lot of Fletcher Cox who is a Pro-Bowler with the Philadelphia Eagles when he was at Mississippi State.
That's pretty high praise!

DeTillier was dead sure that we'd go toe to toe with Alabama in 2013, said it was a toss-up, meanwhile everybody on this board was saying that we lose by three touchdowns, exactly what happened. Take what he says with a grain of salt.

Good Point. I agree. I would also add Toliver to that as well. He was on his guys like stink on shite every week it seemed. He had trouble finding the ball once it was in the air and he's a freshmen, he will improve on that.
Both those guys stood out as freshmen who could be difference makers. Key may be more of a difference maker though.
I can't help but be excited about this defense, especially with Kevin Steele not calling the shots.

Still have to stop the run.
