Not sure what you're trying to say. There's DT depth and able bodies up front. LSU practically has recruited itself with its DLU moniker but has fallen off with production.

I'm saying chavis thrived off players already at LSU. Our defensive line has slowly gotten worse since he's been here. That's a direct result of poor coaching and evaluating.

We shouldn't have had to rely on a kid that was 6-4/265 out of hs to start at DT as a freshman in the sec.

Yeah. Blame Brick Haley for that too. I'm glad we got Orgeron. His arrival isn't talked about enough. It's monumental to have him bring back DLU.

Order of concerns:

1) QB - Obviously
2) WR - We sucked at receiver last year. We had zero good receivers
3) PK - We need to establish consistency with fieldgoals

Whatever is fourth is a distant fourth. Those are our main concerns.

The bodies are there for sure, but at this point that's all they are.

We returned evert contributing DT except Mickey Johnson from last year. I don't expect a huge drop off from the loss of Mickey Johnson

Anthony Johnson (bust)

Would not call him a bust at LSU.

I think most of the lack of pressure was scheme-related. In the past five seasons, only four times has an LSU player had more than 5 sacks. And the most recent was Sam Montgomery. LSU has gone two straight seasons with a player with 5 sacks.

We return the entire two-deep at DT, so I'm not too concerned about depth there. The concern is the ends. We return four (five maybe, if you count Bain) ends who saw action last season (tackles/TFL/sacks)

Bower (16/2.5/0)
Teuhama (7/2/2)
Clark (9/0.5/0)
Neal (3/1.5/0)
Bain (6/0/0)

That doesn't include Arden Key, who may force his way into the rotation. I'm not sure depth is the concern, as those guys were all able to play in limited action, the issue is finding two effective starters on the end. I think the bigger issue is not the talent on hand, but what the new scheme would look like. Chavis tended to ask his ends to play contain, so we'll see how the defense adjusts... or even if they will change scheme at all.

But there's no way this is a bigger issue than QB.

yea, i think LB is a bigger problem. Outside of Beckwith, we have a bunch of guys getting by on their reputation coming in as a recruits, or they "look good" in pads.

Deion Jones, Lamar Louis, Ronnie Feist, its time to do something. Show you have a pulse.

Michael Brockers was a DE coming out of high school and he ended up playing DT for the Tigers, that worked out pretty well for all involved. Taking tall fast guys out of high school that are DEs, adding weight, then moving them to DT works well.

I think Deion Jones has shown that he has the ability. He's just had guys ahead of him on the depth chart.

Not entirely wrong, but a little simplistic. That would be like saying because Pocic was recruited as a tackle, but has successfully played guard (and center), that we should only recruit tackles to play guard... and/or center.

Some players can more easily transition to other positions (OT to G; DE to DT; etc.). But it doesn't mean that should be the strategy.

In the case of Brockers, if I remember correctly, he had very strong legs and was damned near immovable on the interior-- that's why he was able to move inside so successfully. So, that's the kind of info I think coaches are more likely to use when recruiting for a position and planning to move players to a new position... not an arbitrary "let's take tall, fast DEs and bulk them up into DTs"... which might be an asset in making the line more athletic, but a liability in making it strong against interior running.

On the positive side an interview with Lacouture in the spring said that Orgeron was running many more stunts and defensive alignments. Bain in the SG had three sacks...

Im excited to see Bain this year. Coach O lit a fire under his arse and it showed in the Spring Game.

His size will always be a disadvantage. I can remember Deion trying to tackle Dak and he just bounced off of him.

I could see us moving over a younger player from the OL to give us some depth.

Any ideas?

Arden key as a Jack in 3-4 coukd be deadly if he's athletic enough until he grows.

We had 8 DTs on the roster in the Spring, not terribly thin, but not great, either.

We have 6 now:

Thomas
Godchaux
LaCouture
Bain
Gilmore
Herron

We need all 6 to be ready to play. A tall order, but I trust Coach O to have them ready. If Brick was still here, we would probably be screwed.

Lester, you are a buffoon lamar Louis was a starter last year, and the last five or six games he was playing well. Deion Jones has played well in his limited appearances behind Kwon. No problem with the starters.
