Defensive Line Depth Seems like the biggest concern for this season

The line was pretty spotty last year and didn't get pressure very effectively. Other than 57 and 91 in the middle who now have some significant experience and have showed promise, it seems the rest of the rotation is a big question mark. also losing two large men who many thought could dominate from day 1 on the field before they every get a chance to play a snap for the team only hurts the depth.

What do you guys see as the rotation for DE and DT this year? Think the new DC Steele will play more odd fronts and use LBs to rush from outside?

I think DL is a bigger concern that QB at this point.

I was talking about this with some friends this morning and I agree. We were already inexperienced and now we have lost some quality depth. I'm concerned. Coach O will need to do a bunch of yaw-yawing.

LB rotation is a bigger concern imo. Especially if we see a hybrid between the 4-3/3-4 scheme.

DT:
LaCouture
Herron
Godchaux
Gilmore
Thomas

DE:
Bower
Teuhema
Neal
Bain*
Clark
Keys

*Suspended

I like our interior DL rotation. The outside has very little experience. But we'll just have to see what happens there.

Yeah, what a year for Coach O to take over. It's gonna be rough, and someone will miss playing time with minor injuries.

I wonder if the coaches will convert someone just for depth purposes for a year.

Coach O's recruiting is gonna pull us out of this hole

concerns:

1) QB play

2) pass rush
3) LB play
4) DL depth/ LB depth

We're fine. We've recruited DT well but just haven't developed them. DE is a little more concerning due to a lack of experience. I like our guys in the middle and DE should be better pass rushers this year.

Exactly, we'll know right away whether or not Coach O is getting thru to the DE/DL's. Especially with STATE & AU being in the 1st month of the season.

Linebackers are going to be great. Back 7 fantastic.

85 scholarships means you have to avoid injuries at ONE position... this year it's DL.

Chavis said that was a penalty...

Its time for Herron and Gilmore to get off their arse, if they do we will be fine.

I think Herron is the true wildcard of the entire bunch. He plays with a nasty attitude and I think if he gets his body right he has no limits.

barring injury, I think we'll be better than the last two years. in the beginning of last year, we were awful and the losses to msu and au ruined the season.

I'm assuming it was a piss test issue, but last year everyone that saw Herron in practice said he could not be blocked, yet he played very little??

No we haven't, brick and chavis' lack of recruiting is showing. Our starting DTS are converted des. The players not developing can also be the lack of coaching received or poor evaluation. Either way I'm glad both those guys are gone.

DT signed under Chavis:
Anthony Johnson (bust)
Mickey Johnson (wasted schollie)
Greg Gilmore (waiting)
Maquedias Bain (waiting)
Trey lealaimatafao (dismissed)
Travonte Valentine (transfer)

Yeah that's down rt pathetic.

I think only one person said that and it was on 104.5. Herron wasn't fundamentally sound I'm guessing and lacked strength.

No we haven't

Recruiting sites say otherwise. There's tons of untapped potential in that DL group. Godchaux was going to wind up at DT no matter where he went unless it was a 3-4 system.

Not true.

Recruiting sites say those are the DTS we signed under chavis. None in 2010, 2012, and 2015.

Again, I'm glad those dudes are gone, they made their money off that 2009 class that they did not recruit.

I can do linebackers as well and show how awesome chavis was at recruiting them.

Yup. LSU's interior depth is way underrated, but DE is pretty iffy. i think LSU will sacrifice growing pains and give Arden Key a ton of reps

Not sure what you're trying to say. There's DT depth and able bodies up front. LSU practically has recruited itself with its DLU moniker but has fallen off with production.

Arden Key

I really hope he's bulked up. He has all the tools to be a complete DE except size.

One difference I expect to see is that these guys will play at 10-15 lbs heavier than under Chavis. Look at current roster stats and compare to last season numbers. Don't know if this will help there ability to stop up the middle but expose them to fatigue late in game. This could be an issue against HUNH like Auburn who two yrs ago left Freak and Ego rolling on the ground in the 4th qtr gasping for their breath.

On the positive side an interview with Lacouture in the spring said that Orgeron was running many more stunts and defensive alignments. Bain in the SG had three sacks...
