Both INTs they were in zone, looked like Cover 3 for Fulton and Quarters for Stevens. Stevens was the dime backer that replaced the weak side LB. And both times Aranda brought 4-man pressures.

On the Stevens INT they had..

CB - Ward
NB - Vincent
SS - Delpit
FS - Monroe
DB - Stevens
CB - Stingley Jr

I honestly believe this was EXACTLY what Aranda was working towards all season.

The more Shelvin improves, the more liberal we can become in coverage.

With that said, I want Brooks on the field every play against Bama. That "green package" has just destroyed the spread teams we have played this year so far.

looked like Stevens was playing dime lb on his 1 handed int

I've been saying he either needs to play there or rushing

he can't play deep, which everyone knows

It’s definitely improving and that’s a good thing because we are now in an age now where you have to have it.

If we want to win a championship we will need to be able to play zone coverage. Simple as that.

none of the spread teams we've played have Najee Harris as an option

Another thing I will add about the 3 man rush. Increasingly these spread offenses are getting the ball out so fast that it really doesn’t matter how good your pass rush is. The ball is coming out immediately on a timing route.

Having 3 run stoppers and an extra man dropping in zone can actually be more effective especially against an offense like Bama’s. It’s basically like 7on 7 with some of these offenses.

I’ve been critical of Aranda but I think there’s definitely been a method behind it.

100% agree

I definitely think it's why we see less DB pressure

He’s kind of been a non factor for Bama this year. CEH is less than 10 yards total behind him, has a few less attempts, has more TDs, and better YPC and has a better longest carry by over double.

This would fit the narrative. Like everyone else, he saw what Clemson's defense did to Tua in last season's NC game. Played a shell game with pre-snap zone/man defensive looks.

ETA: This pre-snap confusion may be Tua's Achilles' Heel. If so, Bama will game plan around it but this will limit his options and his WR's options.

Tua will be given a small selection of safety valve plays to use when he’s confused. Which will be easier to defend as his receivers will no longer be running option routes according to what the defense is doing. They will have to run a pre-selected route, which is dinosaur football.

But if LSU can cause Tua to confuse the two defenses, even for just a couple of plays at critical times, it will be worth all the big plays we have been giving up this year due to the zone learning curve. Getting Tua out of his comfort zone is half the battle.

It's blatantly obvious that the opposing teams strategy game in and game out is to pick on Vincent. He is always a step or two away from being in good position.

Yes. But don't expect myopics to get this until it has played out. Most people are not strategists. Aranda and Coach O have been experimenting and posturing and preparing as the opportunity best allows (knowing that they would easily win those games, and that some of their critics would not like it because it is less than optimal for parts of some games).

agreed. Playing zone without totally screwing up switch-offs and assignments had to be cleaned up. After that, a mix of blitzes and disguises with the ultimate goal of generating more turnovers by way of that zone and QBs trying to force it.

Thing to clean up now: We've been great against the run, except on 3rd down in this zone. And 'long handoffs' against this zone on 3rd down also (including long ones). I think should condense the zone as part of the disguise, plant feet (except for nickel/safety over the top) at 2 yds short of line to gain and stop letting underneath stuff keep us on field. Current strategy on 3rd-long is predicated on this zone and getting pressure with 4. It's not quite working consistently, on both counts.

That's because Vincent is always playing over the middle, and often in man coverage. That is an extremely difficult job. I like Vincent. He has an NFL future. LSU just puts him in extremely tough situations.
