1 more thing... One of the greatest sportswriters of all time was L.A. Times' Jim Murray... He covered LSU game on Saturday and Rams game in L.A. on Sunday. His Monday article, which I'm still trying to locate, began, "It ought to be against the law to have to watch any football game on Sunday after watching a football game in Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge on a Saturday night..."

I just saw the face mask by Benjy Thibodaux. It was inadverdant but it did happen. I had always heard how bad of a call it was. And this is the first time I had ever had the chance to see it. Wow! Shows how full of shite people can be...

There was no question on the face mask, the question was the right guard and right tackled moved. The far side line judge (USC side) did appear to throw a flag just play stated.

I saw the facemask and saw that flag thrown also.

U-19 is in the Southeastern upper deck part of the stadium.

I want to see LSU game film of this game, as it always shows the visitor teams side line. It will answer the question on the far side flag and if a USC player did come on the bench and make a tackle on Gajan as Mac said he did.

I was part of that bunch rocking the buses until the USC players started unloading from the bus. Man, those dudes were unreal, they were so huge! Much sturdier than our guys at the time. We formed a gauntlet for them to walk through, and we Tiger Baited 'em. Judging from their size, we kept it to Tiger Bait, and nothing more. Anything more, and I was afraid of what they might do! That was some fun though!!

If it was, it was one of their first games ever. Espn launched in September of 1979.

It was an ESPN game, but it was on tape delay.

Most incredible game I have ever attended in TS. Just Unbelievable. Here is a link to a good article about it.

NOLA Article\

quote:

But Lott, now a businessman in the San Francisco area, still speaks of the game in a kind of incredulous tone.

"Every one of us left that night saying 'that was a game, ' but I still think about it that way, " he said. "I haven't been in an event like that at any level of football. Out of all the games I've ever played in, I've never been in anything like that, and I am including my Super Bowls in that assessment."

it was NOT an ESPN game - ESPN showed the USC broadcast of the game on delay. ESPN did not start showing live games until '84. USC did a live broadcast of the game for the folks back in California and that is the ONLY version you ever see on here or on you tube that has announcers

I was there with my dad we were in the bowl...section 419 and when we saw the flags and everyone around us thought it was going to be false start on USCs line man moving...the play should have been blown dead...

Still the most intense and loudest game I've ever been to..nothing to this day has compared..and I don't think nothing ever will again...

Never forget listening on radio as then radio announcer John Ferguson (a pro compared to what we have now) uncharacteristically started the broadcast with as I remember the following words:

The joint is jumping tonight !!!!!! Does anyone know if the radio track exists of the USC game?

Here's a throwback thread on this topic:

Tigerdroppings from 2009

The thing I remember most about the game was Hokie grunting and giving away the outcome of each play.

Greatest sporting event I've ever attended...you had to be there to know. My dad spoke with Jeff Fisher when he was head coach of the Titans and asked him if he remembered the LSU game in '79. His exact reply: " I sure do, I'll never forget it ".

If you find it check out the drive by USC towards the end for the TD. On 4th down they went for it if I am remembering correctly and it looked like the right side of the USC. Line moved or raised up before the snap.! We stopped them and when we saw the flag we were sure it was off sides and we would refuse the penalty of course and take over on downs. Well the flag was against the Tigers for a face mask.!looking at the replay later, the face mask was not grabbed but one of the Tigers players reached out and his hand only rubbed the QB's mask on the side of the helmet not even causing the QB to have to turn his head. USC got a 1st down and went on to score and win 17-12.

I have most of about 3 1/2 quarters of the game on audio. I had set my recorder to run as I left for the game. The tape ran out on the TEAC recorder. Great game, the best I've been to in tiger stadium. As I left the stadium one of the USC fans told me "you guys have spirit" ...no kidding!!! Announcers were John Ferguson Walter Hill and Brother Martin Coach (I think-Name?)

Have you checked the tape to make sure it still works? Really, this is the only instance I've come across where someone knows they have the radio broadcast for sure. Would love to get a copy of this if there's some way to do that...

Was my first game to attend at Tiger Stadium. Will never forget how electric the atmosphere was. If you look at their roster as mentioned earlier with the Heisman trophy winners and 1st round draft choices, it was absolutely amazing to watch LSU stay with them and just about pull it off.

Best football I've ever seen period. I was just out of college at the time and had never been to a game before. The first was the best.
