Coach O supports using the zone. That is not likely the only problem with the "D", however LSU has always had problems playing zone and/or prevent "D". We have two corners in Ricks and Stingley who are as good as anyone in covering man. And our other defensive backs are pretty damn good as well. The problem last year and last night as I see it is determining who to pick up on crossing patterns or where to go if the play turns out to be a run. Am I wrong?

I agree. If we continue to play zone, we’ll get picked apart.

Let's start with stopping the crossing routes as well as plugging the massive running lanes.

Properly run zone is how you stop crossers from killing you. Crossing routes are really tough to defend in man to man.

Playing zone works against what UCLA was doing, it's just our linebackers can't cover for shite and communication was horrible

didn't matter anyways because UCLA was running it down our throats because our linebackers and safeties were failing on gap assignments, and our ends couldn't hold the edge

it all comes down to coaching

They weren’t running zone. They were in man. That’s why the crossing routes killed them.

That’s fine but not with 2 safeties deep with linebackers that can’t cover. You need to play cover 0 with stingley and Ricks on islands and use the safeties and linebackers to double up the tight-ends, slot, and backs.

If you are lined up face to face with the receiver, you can at least slow down him down at the line of scrimmage and give the rush a little more time to harass the QB or create havoc in the backfield.

It’s quite obvious that none of you’ll know anything about football. You can’t just play straight man all game every game. That’s how you give up 600yds passing in crossing routes.
Also the wr’s will just run off your support players and they will zone read and option you to death. You have to be able to mix coverage and disguise where your pressure and what coverage your actually playing.
Bottom line you have to be able to stop the run .everything springs from that.

They're going to have to run zone to have a chance of beating State. Someone didn't watch that game last year. You have to mix in zone with man to beat anyone these days.

We got picked a part running man too. Our “DBU” isn’t as good as advertised. They actually kind of suck. Our defense front was decent to start the game then it went all downhill once UCLA started hitting the edges

Outside zone runs, used angles to create creases and we had poor gap integrity and our run fits were shite

What game you were watching? LSU needed to run more zone.

Running man on 3rd and 14 in the redzone was a criminally bad call. Zone up, play the sticks, take the field goal.

your lbs and safeties are going to have fun trying to cover latu and billingsley when ricks and stingley are chasing metchie and jameson down the field

the tight end was smart, he kept running to the part of the field without a zone

This is the exact opposite of what you have to do to stop shallow crosses or mesh concepts that have been getting ran on LSU at will by shitty and great teams all across college football since 2020. Were a little over 3 months away from 2022 and the team has no signs of how to defend this concept.

It's coaching at this point. I refuse to believe all these players are this inept at playing defense. You're paid millions to teach fundamentals.
