Don't have LBs to run 3-4

You need a couple of 2 gapper defensive tackles for a 3-4. We don't have any as far as I know.

As if we're not confused enough!

Considering our numbers at LB a move to a 3-4 would be a true indicator of the competence of our DC and head coach.

It's more about the type of D lineman we have than it is about the backers

We don't have anyone that can play the nose. We could move some DTs to DE and use guys like Key at OLB but you really need a huge NT to make that defense effective IMO

play bump and run man coverage. None of this zone shite

This bothered me all season. Why did this team not play more man?
Did we not have 2 lock down corners?
Is it Steele's defensive philosophy or is it a personnel issue?

We have much better personnel to run this scheme then the rant would lead you to believe. They see 3-4 and assume that we would just need to play another LB. In reality, in this type of scheme Key, Bower, and Tuehema would all be converted to OLB. Maybe even Isaiah Washington. So in reality you will have to play fewer traditional LBs, and have your smaller but quicker DEs become OLBs. I think where you run into trouble is that you will be severely undersized in the middle. You have nobody big enough or good enough to be a nose guard, and you only have one LB with the size to be a 3-4 ILB.

I agree the change needs to happen, but we should wait at least a year and try to get some more of the right personnel.

In an ideal world, I would run a single high safety defense like the Seahawks run with Earl Thomas. You have one of the best safeties in the country, and two very good man to man defenders on the outside. Why not provide additional support against the run and make short passes harder to complete? Then again they don't pay me $1 million to create a scheme. Maybe Jamal doesn't have the range for that kind of defense, Idk.

I love this line of thinking. The thinnest position on the entire roster...

Let's put more of them on the field!

In other words, it is absolutely not feasible to run this defense next year. Unless we pull in some JUCO defensive studs.... Which is not likely.

Not that I care for a switch, and we play nickel the majority of the time anyway. But if we were in 3-4 we would have more LBs. Key and other guys would be olb. As well as new guys like Andre Anthony.

But in all reality a 3-4 with key at olb rushing is essential a 4-3 lol. He would just start standing up half the time. He's already played coverage at DE sometimes (UF TD on wheel)

To be fair, Bama hired him twice. It's dissonant to hold Bama in high regard and to say that they hired a shitty coach twice.

Not as DC with control over defensive scheme. Being a position coach and recruiter is nothing like running an entire defense, which he has proved to be terrible at.

I could see this more than worrying about a 3-4 scheme.

Are you serious? With what LBs? We'll be lucky to field 3 competent ones next year. I wouldn't put it past him since he seems to try to force everything on defense like running more zones that clearly none of the players in the secondary are comfortable doing. He has a complete lack of understanding adjusting scheme to player strengths. It's not a coincidence when LSU plays more man on defense they do much better.
