It's a nickname instigated by Sonic in an attempt to boost corndog sales.

They attempted the same thing in the 90's with the "Southern University Tater Tots".

It's pretty hilarious when I travel to games and the home fans shout "CORNDOGS!!!" at me and expect me to be insulted or something.

I've never understood the corn dog thing. It is a total non sequitur. I've never seen anyone frying food at an LSU tailgate.

Not totally true. There is a weekend every other year when a whole lot of alligator is fried on campus.

what is the deal with the Corn Dog

Actually, I asked a fan who screamed this at me once. I'm still waiting for his explanation. 2 years and waiting.

If an opponent has the same mascot as you (see: Auburn Tigers and LSU Tigers) you can't really make fun of tigers.

Auburn doesn't know what the frick they are. Tigers? War Eagles? Plainsmen? As for us, please remember we are the LSU Fighting Tigers. More John Lejeune than Tigger.

That reminds me...I went to the plains for Grand Theft Auburn in 2006. When an Aubie idiot tried to insult me with the corndog thing, I actually told him it was a non sequitur. He looked at his rather large wife and asked her, "what did he just call me?"

After a whole day drinking and then a night in Tiger Stadium...I would be happy if all I smelled like was a Corn Dog.

They are quite yummy you know...with ketchup for me.

I beleive Ray Ray Rodman had it right in the link below:

LINK

Corndogs = Carnies, white trash, trailor park cajuns, etc.

This insult derives from the Big 12. After diligent research, I was able to trace it down to a message board referring to Oklahoma State fans circa 2001. This is a shame. It seems to have derived from an original allegation that Oklahoma State fans were carnies (people who travel around with carnivals, traveling circuses or state fairs). Since people at these events eat lots of corndogs, the greatest college football insult of all time was born here. Then, Auburn fans appropriated it to their own devices. It's really sad for me to have to report this, but, as always, I ask the hard questions and report the unpopular answers.

Seems a hint of bourbon is the aroma I get sitting next to LSU fans.
