for some stadiums they are simply TOO well-known to be attractive for corporate sponsorship.
Interesting....great point. Never thought of it that way and I believe you are right.

quote:Trust me. Its just a matter of time. The pressure to pay coaches, the need for improvements all continue to push the cost for doing business in college athletics will some day, and sooner than later will have every college stadium doing this. Its a shame but I believe this to be true.
College Stadiums that have corporation names
From what I remember, this was attempted at Tiger Stadium, briefly, and they were told, ahem, NO.

Don't forget the Carrier Dome for Syracuse, which set the standard for naming rights of college stadiums.

Much like Alex Box (although it's not named after him because of a monetary donation.)

You're right. Although the money was given by Carrier (I believe the man and not the corporation), it does not fit the "corporate name" mold. Similar to "Bud Walton" in Arkansas. Does it make a difference in your eyes if the money is given from a donor as opposed to a corporation and the facility is named after the donor?

As long as the donor was an alum, which I guess is usually the case.

Speaking of that, that's going to be a pretty nice place.

quote:Not in my mind. The people at the Carrier Dome told me that the donation was from the Carrier Corporation (this was a few years ago). I contacted them to settle a bet. If the company has a relationship with the school (like Exxon does with LSU), then I don't think it matters. I would want the school to make sure that the company image fit with the school's overall image.

FYI on the Carrier Dome from an article I found:
quote:
When the Carrier Dome was built in 1980, only one detail was certain about its future. It would always be called the Carrier Dome.
A $2.75 million gift from Mel Holm, the CEO of Carrier Corporation, gave Carrier the naming rights of the Dome in perpetuity. Other than the name, there was little else anyone could predict about what would become of a 50,000-seat stadium in Central New York.

quote:Hmmm. It's hard to say whether the gift was corporate or not when it's put like that. I have a letter on Carrier Dome stationary that says the gift was from the corporation. It was written by a secretary (I think) in the Dome facilities office. I can't really weigh her credibility vs. the author of that article.

Am aware of that and the town of Chevy Chase,MD. But I still wouldn't want that jerks name on our campus.

So if Exxon wants to make a 80 million dollar donation to LSU, you would say NO? I say take the money and call it ExxonMobil Tiger ST. After all Exxon and LSU have the same mascot.

I'm with you LSUcrawfish. I would never want Tiger Stadium to get renamed, but if ExxonMobil said to LSU, we'll pay you 5 million dollars a year to have our name on the building, I'd have a VERY hard time saying "keep ya'll check" , and a VERY EASY time saying "thank you sir, may I have another."

I personally think its humbling to need the assistance of a corporation to build a stadium. Its like attaching a stigma to your program. None of the top-level programs need help building stadiums.
