Coaching Scared (2007 vs the Present)

Ok. We all know that a win is a win and road wins in the SEC are never a giver. 1-0 sure beats 0-1.
That said, despite the penalties, the game Saturday never should have been left up to Miss St to determine w the winner.
This got me reminiscing about Les and his history at LSU. Specifically 2 games on 2007 that highlight the difference in Miles then vs now.
First was Auburn 2007. Les could have done the easy thing and played for the field goal. But no. He had Matt freakin Flynn and Denetrius Byrd and said screw it. My guys can make this play...TD
Second was just a few weeks later vs Florida. 4th down after 4th down, Lea put the game in the hands of his guys. Weather it was RP, Flyn or Heater, Miles trusted his players to make the play when it counted.
Fast forward to today. We have more raw talent on offense than in 2007. We had a game that could have been put out of reach early. Yet Miles once again showed that he was scared to put the game in the ha da if his players. He showed he would rather go 3 and out and let the other team determine the outcome than trust his guys to make a play.
I just don't get it. In 2007 weather you agrees with his decisions or not, there was no doubt that Miles was coaching to win.
That fearlessness seems to gone.

The coaches show should be interesting, but since they screen all the callers it will be a sunshine pumpers convention.

im the guy that screens the calls

The JJ/JL years certainly affected Miles' mentality
I'll certainly agree with that

We were behind in the Auburn scenario you describe. That's slightly different than being up at Miss State away.

Maybe he trusted White to make a play on D when Miss St was trying to get into field goal range

Was discussing this with my dad after the game. Pre 2008 Les was so much more entertaining.

I get that. But you can't deny that the ultra conservative playing very nearly cost us this game.
I for one would rather our coaches not leave it up to the other guy to determine if we win or not.

Ryan Perilloux has left this program scarred

looking back, there really is not any difference..
miles coached the same kind of game. run, run, pass on 3rd. we had an efficient qb and wide receiver set that could get away with it.
yeah, miles pulled some fancy plays every now and again, and he still does. they were just more dramatic in those settings.
and think about Florida. we were running the ball time and time again. and we didn't make first downs after 3 runs; so we ran again.
miles hasn't changed. to me we are viewing it thru distorted lenses.

Weren't both those games at home?

The linchpin here is Jarret Lee. He was a promising young quarterback who was thrown into the fire early and burned. I think Miles felt he was too aggressive with Lee and it affected the rest of Lee's career. There's a point at which learning from mistakes goes too far and leads to a qb becoming gun shy. When Lee was qb, Miles was still aggressive offensively, but when he realized his aggressive play calling backfired with Lee, he changed his philosophy with young quarterbacks. I think he will work BH in slowly and increase eventually lengthen the leash, but it probably won't be fast enough for most fans.

We have the talent on offense to make those plays now. He just won't call them.
And I disagree. The offense, while still power run based, was way more creative.

Yeah, so.
Do you deny that he left the outcome of the game Saturday to the other team rather than trust his own guys to deliver the kill shot.

Ok, I wish people would shut their pie-holes for a minute and take a look at this:
MS State had a grand total of 43 yards rushing on 26 carries. That is 1.65 yards per carry. Our run defense was so good at stopping the run, it almost backfired on us because we had to go into a prevent defense later on when Dak and co. went into a hurry up spread.
Dak is an unbelievable QB, with a lot of experience. He threw for 335, which isn't ideal for our secondary to let happen, but again, he is far and away the best QB this team will face this year.
LSU won the possession battle by 6 minutes.
The biggest issue was that LSU had 9 penalties for 95 yards. That is very very costly, and allowed MSST to stay in the game, not LSU's offensive gameplan. Yes, we could have opened it up more, but why? We were getting almost 6 yards per carry, and were slapping their D-Line in the face all night.
Seems dumb to risk throwing any more than you have to with a young QB, with 61,000 bumpkins with cowbells late in a game with an opponent that is going to start taking more risks due to time running out quickly.

So you want Crowton back is what you're saying?
