What do Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and Les Miles have in common

Age
Battle tested
National Championships
Stellar recruiting
Winners

You cant replace these guys with the Tom Herman's of the world...they are not battle tested. Ask Michigan, Florida, Texas, Nebraska, and soon Georgia. The Muschamps, Hermans, Strongs, are just not ready for prime time....and the rabid fans at the great programs will not give them time to win.....if you dont believe that, just look at the Rant.

You described Paterno, Bowden, and Mack Brown. I guess they had the right to leave when they wanted too huh?

according to you there are no "up and coming" HC's.

there are and there always has been. we just don't know who they are. a successful HC has to be in a job that's the right fit and he has to have some damn good asst. coaches and recruiters.

speaking of florida, I guess they shouldn't have gone after urban when he was at utah, since you know, they weren't in a big boy conference......

all of these schools replaced their coaches with coaches or coordinators from other big boy conferences at some point or another.

florida's gone off the reservation twice with Meyer and mcelwain, both not from big boy conferences and have had success at UF.

Miles and Saban both walked into LSU with a team loaded with talent. They were both mediocre at best before coming here. The reason for their success has everything to do with having the resources to build programs. Schools that are willing to spend more will usually win more.

However, before Stoops, Meyer, Saban and Miles won championships, they all had to build their respective teams and maintain consistency whether they inherited talented or recruited the talented, initially.

That is part of coaching on any level. Just so you know, Meyer used to coach at Bowling Green. Satan was the former coach at Toledo early in his career. Stoops used to be the DC for Kansas State and Florida at different time periods before he got his job at OU.

As for Coach Miles, he was the OC (1995-97) at Oklahoma State for 3-years prior to going back to the school to become their head coach after his stint with the Cowboys in the NFL. That is why he likes to tamper with the play calling at LSU. It is in his blood whether we as fans like it or not at all. He likes influencing the play calling.

No matter who Coach Miles' keeps or hires as the OC, they will abide by his orders because he will influence the play-calling for game day. That is the saddest part of this commentary, F@@king Les!

To be fair, before Urban was Battle Tested he was basically Tom Herman.

Then again so was Sumlin.

How did Saban, Meyer and Stoops become Saban, Meyer and Stoops? They had to start somewhere

Kind of like a 2-loss national champion? I'm glad we won but it was a fluke that all of the teams we needed to lose lost.

Tom Herman is ready. He's the next Urban Meyer. He'll be at Houston for probably 1-2 more years and then head off to a top program.

Even Les only had 3 years of head coaching experience, at Okie St no less, before he got the LSU job.

I mean you must have forgotten that Mark Richt was an OC at FSU before spending the entirety of his head coaching career, thus far, at UGA. He matched the record of his previous coach year one, and then went 44-8 over his next 4 years with 3 division crowns, 2 SEC championship crowns, and 3-1 in bowl games with 2 BCS berths.

In Charlie Strong's case, Texas was extremely screwed before he got there. Mack Brown left it a mess. Texas is doing it on the back of young guys right now. Outside of 3-4 seniors, their best players are freshman and sophomores. If they keep Strong for 4 years, Texas will turn around to a respectable team especially since they went and got a legit QB coach and 1st time OC who has coached several QBs in pass happy offenses. He's worked with Jimmy Graoppolo, Matt Johnson, and Dane Evans.

You mean like in 2003 when we waited for the results of the last saturday to see if we were in the NC.

That's different. Texas A&M has always been a mediocre football program with a few good-great 3-4 year stretches here and there. He did give them their best season since 94 and their best stretch since 97-99.

What I'm starting to figure out is that Spavital needs to be let go. He got rid of the DC from last year and their pass defense shot up through the roof with Chavis. Their rush defense is also slightly better even though it didn't look that way in a couple of games this year. The last 3 QBs have cracked under pressure extremely bad.
