Classy Rice Fans

Kansas State's loss capped its biggest season in the 109-year history of the program. The Wildcats, who were picked to finish ninth in the Big 12 before the season, finished off a 43-18-1 campaign in which they made their first tournament berth.
Hill acknowledged the magnitude of their accomplishment when he removed key players Justin Bloxom, Drew Biery, Jordan Cruz, Rob Vaughn and Dane Yelovich while they were playing defense with one out in the eighth inning. The sellout crowd of 4,589 -- mostly packed with Rice fans -- responded by giving the KSU players a long standing ovation.
"It was a pretty emotional time for me," Hill said. "It hits hard what these guys have done. These guys did something that people have been trying to do for 109 seasons at Kansas State. I thought they deserved a little credit."
And it was even more touching for the players.
"Those Rice fans had been heckling us all weekend and for them to do that [the standing ovation] really meant a lot to us," said Vaughn, who played high school baseball in nearby Humble, Texas. "It's something I can honestly say I'll never forget."

Classy on the part of the Rice fans but I have to question a coach who removes his best players while losing just so they can receive an ovation. Its one thing to do it when you're up big but to do it when you're down tells your team you've given up on them.

I think it's understandable if you are down 15, but they were only down 7 with 5 outs left, I've seen stranger things happen.

Focus on the actions of the Rice fans as opposed to the K-State coach.

Yea, that's my thinking as well. We saw teams put up 6,7,8 runs in one inning during last weekend's regionals. I think if I were one of those players I would have asked "what the hell are you doing?"

They were the visiting team. So they only had 3 outs left, in which to score 9 runs (Rice scored 2 in the 8th).

still, not impossible

Not impossible, but very highly improbable. The K-State coach was in the best position to know what his players were capable of doing. Regardless of the K-State coach's actions, it was still a nice gesture by the Rice fans.

Please tell me you're not comparing Ohio State's pitching staff (on the road nonetheless) to Rice's pitching staff (at home).

LSU would never pulled their players only down 7. LSU has made too many comebacks.

No need to compare the two. Its college baseball and anything can happen. And for the record Rice's bullpen is not formidable.
I think this was a case of a school and a coach who had never been in this situation before and opted for the accolades over trying to win the game. Bad move and there is no other way to view it.

There were far more fans than that at the game,, almost capacity which is 5,900 something
It was a nice moment, wasn't just polite applause but sincere and sustained. And the announcer mentioned the teams accomplishment.
as far as the heckling goes, it was good natured for the most part. ALTHOUGH there were do drunken wheat rats in the beer tent that needed an arse whoopin

I disagree, so I guess there is.

Couldn't agree more...baseball, may I remind some of you misty eyed ranters, is a game with no time limits. Twenty-seven outs are needed to win a nine inning game. College baseball history is replete with monumental comebacks. You honor your teams accomplishments after you make the last out...not before.

...unless it's a Sunday game in the SEC...

I disagree as well. When program is used to losing as Kstate obviously is. They have that mentality to make the most of a loss. LSU on the other hand is a storied program who will fight till the last out to win and has proven that it CAN win in the face of an apparent loss. It's a different mentality. So go ahead and flame away with your opposing opinion now.
