Holtmann would be a great hire. Not sure he would come to LSU, but if so, I think it would be a HR.

He's not a better job. That's ridiculous. He may have a better team but Butler's not a better job than LSU. LSU can win a national title. Butler can't.

I agree with this. LSU basketball has potential, but fans aren't seeing because of how bad we've been the past 2 years. It's easier to recruit high profile players and assistants to a school like LSU than it is to recruit them to butler, Xavier and Cinci. If you question that, just go look at those teams recruiting rankings compared to ours (excluding this year). If LSU makes a great hire, then we will really see what our program is capable of.

I was going to be blunt and say butler is the better job, but money talks. I can't believe that's all he makes

I think he would be a solid hire. Him or Archie Miller.

I mean we have a shot at Holtmann, I think hes on the radar for other teams but he wont be their top target. He is defiantly would be one of our top realistic candidates imo.

Well, I guess have 3 of the 50 greatest players of all time, the NCAA all time leading scorer, the single season point per game average leader, we've been to more final fours, and have the most sec titles of anyone not named Kentucky. How many final fours have Xavier or Cincinnati or butler been too?

who gives a shite about what ranked players went here? 1 never saw the post season. one never won a playoff game.

also lol @ the second best sec bball program. sec basketball is a terrible product.

and finally...Butler has played in two championship games. how many have we played in?

the level of delusion with some of you people is unreal

I can't even...

South Carolina's crowning achievement as a program is 3 sweet sixteen appaearances. LSU has been to 4 final fours.

On Friday night, South Carolina won their first tournament game in 44 years.

FORTYfrickingFOUR years

But yea that dwarfs LSU

Holtman would probably be a great hire. But I doubt he is even on Alleva's radar.

With Brad Underwood leaving OSU, Steve Prohm is now one of, if not the lowest paid coach in the Big 12. He and his staff have deep Louisiana/Gulf Coast connections. I think he would be a good fit for LSU and he is MORE than prime for the taking (LSU could offer a big pay raise; Fred Hoiberg is about to become available again which means Prohm will be coaching against his ghost at ISU; He's losing nearly every significant player from this year's team, which means a big rebuild next season)

LSU could ABSOLUTELY pounce, but from everything we've heard, it appears Alleva is wanting to go cheap (Prohm has a $1 mill buyout which Alleva purportedly doesn't want to consider paying)

Illinois' AD didn't use a search firm and he was able to take a good coach away from OSU when no one knew he would even be available. Alleva will probably dump $75k into a search firm only to hire Kermit Davis, a guy you or I for $75 could have told him would be available.

Whether their hires are good or not, Mizzou, Illinois, NC State all pounced quickly and got their new coach one day after that coaches season ended. Well Joe, Iowa State is done. MTSU is done. VCU is done. Nevada is done. If the new coach is coming from one of those places, we should start to hear something soon, right?

I read that Okie State's AD was not getting along with Underwood. Might have had to do with Underwood being underpaid.

I think that Mike "I'm a Man" Gundy also has problems with the AD, so sounds like a less than ideal work environment.

Prohms buyout is 50% of what's left on his deal. 50% of 3 yrs @ 1.5 per is 2.25M at the cheapest (not sure if any bonuses or media/apparel money comes into play in his buyout). Alleva isn't going that route.

They just won their first tourney game in 40+ years.

You're right. And nine sweet sixteens, triple the amount of USCjr, but they dwarf us.

I want to care about LSU basketball again...

It's crazy how other schools can have their new coaches a day or so after that coach is done the season but not even a hint LSU is any closer knowing a new coach would be needed by late January if not sooner...

I'm just going to assume Alleva's "coach" is still playing but I'm sure that would make me look like an arse when the hire comes...

For the last 8 or 9 years hard to argue, but there are signs of getting back to a seat of prominence at least competitively.

SEC is currently 5-1 in the NCAA tourney with the only loss a close nail-biter, 5-5 against the conference many consider the best in basketball this year in the Big 12 in the SEC/Big 12 challenge despite the fact we were one of the 10 teams entered, and the recent inclusion of several big name coaches who seem to be improving each of their programs albeit slowly.

Yeah that was a bit of a head scratcher. I have a good friend who is a big Illini basketball fan and he is not happy with the hire.

His take is that the Illini's best teams have almost always been a product of recruiting the Chicago area well and Underwood has not ties to the area.

He tells me the Chicago area coaches are not very happy about the hire, and he says he'll have to hire an assistant who does to try to placate this sentiment.

Thanks. Then I would agree it is probably doubtful Alleva would go after him. Still though, all of that stuff is negotiable. I would definitely speak with him. The timing might be right with the big trump card being that Fred Hoiber may soon be available. ISU fans can't be anything but happy with the job he has done there in two years. However, Hoiberg will always be the hero. We've seen this play out here with Miles/Saban.

Miles went 22-4 in his first two seasons at LSU. Still, you had many attributing his success to "Saban's players" and BR was apoplectic when it was announced Saban was going to Bama. Miles won the NC in 2007 and then never lived up to Saban again in the minds of the fanbase. From the outside looking in I think many people felt Les was one of the most underappreciated coaches in America. If I were Joe, I would try to sell Prohm on that.

Maybe it is a win/win. Prohm gets to leave and not have to chase the ghost of Hoiberg next season (which will almost assuredly be a rebuilding year for them) and ISU gets a chance to possibly be reunited with their first love, Hoiberg

I've heard quite the opposite. My Illini friends are excited.

There were people on the radio here yesterday saying the high school and AAU coaches are pumped about the hire. Bill Self had no ties to the area either and he recruited most of the 2005 Final Four team. Self highly respects Underwood, too and have known each other since Self hosted Underwood on a recruiting visit to OK State.

And Underwood was making such relatively little money at OK State, Illinois lured him with a figure that gives him extra money to fill out his staff with ties to Chicago.
