The bigger the bowl games, the bigger amount of money the university receives. As long as miles is coaching we will be in lower tier bowls. They should have bought him out and it would pay for itself in the near future

The money goes to the conference to be split amongst the members.

All bowl and TV monies are split evenly among the SEC

Well I checked

Looks like each school does keep it's bowl money

Some of you people have Miles Derangement Syndrome. This isn't accurate at all in the SEC.

I made this same argument a few days ago.

Many people complained about Saban's salary when Bama hired him, but the university has been paid back many times over. Short term pain for long term gain. Great
leaders understand this concept.

Our president apparently does not.

The Peach Bowl is a NY6 game. I don't understand why people can't figure this out.

Our fan base would scoff at a peach bowl bid. It's what we do. Anything outside of playoff is failure

Well that's true if the coach they bring in is as good as Sabn. Is that argument you're making?

Link? I honestly don't recall anyone saying he was overpaid.

Then you weren't paying attention. Many people were complaining.

They're not complaining now.

In actuality the bowl pot is split evenly with all sec teams after team expenses.
The bowl pay out only matters to independent teams.
30 million is a big hit to absorb. Bowl payouts won't cover that!

No, merely trying to point out that paying a big chunk of money now can pay off later.

Yeah, but it can go the other way too, right? I mean isn't that precisely what Texas thought? How much bowl money are they bringing in? Same for Tennessee with Fulmer. Same for Michigan with Carr, and on and on.

I guess I'm trying to point out that most of the time programs make the move you're suggesting, it immediately tanks the program.

It's hard to believe there are people who still do not get this.

"The bigger the bowl games, the bigger amount of money the university receives."

This is not necessarily true. For example, last years Orange Bowl Payout was bigger than the CFP games due to the nature of its contract. This year, the Rose and Sugar bowls will have larger payouts than the CFP games due to the same reason. Im sure this will change in the future. Also, teams within each conference share most of the revenue made in bowl games. However, there are sometimes "bonuses" given to teams who make bowl games with larger layouts.

It wasn't about money being available, it was about perception of money being spent. Alexander didn't care about how money was being spent, he didn't want the public or the legislature that he has been poor mouthing, to perceive that the University was spending money.

Yes, there are certainly direct and indirect advantages to playing in elite games, such merchandise sales, a 3 hour commercial on national TV. Plus, it a lot easier to raise money (both on the athletic and academic side) when you have success.
