As I am still a younger Tiger on this board...I recently read about Duhe's death. The article states he died on the practice field in September. Any Tigers on here remember when that happened? How big of a shadow did it cast over the team?

It was during the summer of 1970...odd historical note, Duhe's death saved Bert Jones from a redshirt...

I also remember John McKeithen coming on the radio before the Notre Dame game and talking about how the quarterback died...

I think it was a pretty big shadow although I had little contact with LSU that year because I was in basic and AIT.

wonder how different the Notre Dame game would have been that year if Duhe had lived?

Even though I was only 6, I remember some of it.
He died I believe a couple of weeks before the season opener in 1970, of a brain hemorrhage.

LSU lost the season opener in September of 1970 in Tiger Stadium to big underdog Texas A&M 20-18.
A&M completed a Hail Mary TD pass on the last play of the game that was tipped by 2 LSU DBs and caught and ran the rest of the way in.

Prevailing accounts say Duhe's death absolutely had an effect on the team. LSU was a preseason Top 10 team and did eventually win the SEC crushing Ole Miss 61-17 on Dec. 5 and losing to #1 Nebraska 17-12 in the Orange Bowl.

LSU's only losses that year were to A&M, at Notre Dame 0-3, and Nebraska.

Butch Duhe signing with LSU was kind of a "Leonard Fournette" level coup as he was a highly sought after recruit. It would have been interesting to see how the depth chart would have been affected had he lived.
One note...he died during preseason but not on the practice field. I could be wrong but I think he died either in the dorm or at the infirmary...
He was a well liked teammate and I do think it had an effect on the team's play that year.
But the best game they played that year was the end of year against Ole Miss...Archie in an arm cast, etc!

I saw him on campus back in the spring of '70 a few times. He had charisma... great athlete... could run like a deer. He always looked like the picture of health. Sad ending.

My dad played against him in HS and with him at LSU. If I recall, he roomed just down the hall from him. Needless to say, it was a pretty big deal at the time.

He died in the University Infirmary. Not on the practice field.
The team stayed in the cemetery for almost two hours after the funeral.

He died my first day going to LSU. Heard about him on the radio while moving in the dorm. Very sad

if i'm not mistaken Butch Duhe died on Sept.7th 1970. At that time our season consisted of 10 games, and in most seasons the first game wasn't until until the second week and in some cases the third week of September.

My grandmother on my dads side agve my dad an LSU book covering the history of LSU football. It went to print after Duhe signed with LSU but before his death. IDK where that book is now, but there was a long write-up on LSU signing Duhe and the hope he'd help LSU win a NC.
