Bowl payouts Cotton vs. Capital One

Payout for bowl does not go directly to LSU, though. All SEC bowl payouts go to the SEC and is divided 13 ways. That said, a school does get more "travel money" when they play in a higher payout bowl.

Regardless, the difference in payout between Cap1 and Cotton is just over a million dollars ($3 million vs $4.2 million). That money does not go directly to the school, though, so the conversation about "money to LSU" as it relates to bowl payout is moot.

FWIW, Outback and Cotton have the same payout at $3mil.

doesn't the money shared with the SEC anyway? I don't think LSU loses any money in this situation...

If you aren't going to a BCS bowl, it really doesn't matter if the payout is 3 or 4 million. SEC splits it anyway.

teams can certainly go to bowls consecutively... but it's not something the bowls necessarily desire if there's another solid option

If the money is split evenly, wouldn't we still get more money? Not as much, though.

The SEC splits it, but I heard it is a "pro rated" split depending on what bowl you go to. From what I understand (I could be wrong) the money is split 13 ways with each school getting an equal share of that money and the school who actually goes to that bowl gets the 13th (extra) share.


For example. If LSU goes to the Cotton Bowl and that Bowl pays out 3 million, it is split into 13 shares of $230K with all the SEC schools receiving $230K and LSU receiving $460K.
If South Carolina goes to the Capital One Bowl, the 4.25 million is split into 13 shares of $326K with all the SEC schools receiving $326K and USCe getting $652K.

The money goes to the conference and it is split 13 ways with the 13th to the conference. Bowl teams are given a travel allowance that is in addition to their share that depends on the bowl payout. A BCS team gets something like 2M or so. You could consider it an extra share, but it ain't an equal one. For the smaller bowls it's probably bigger than a prorated share for the nonparticipants.
