It looks like the most recent payouts for these 2 bowls are pretty far apart.

Capital One - $4.25 million
Cotton - $3.0 million

I'm thinking we would want the Capital One bowl again for the money it will bring in. The Cotton Bowl would be great if they could up the payout..? Just for comparison the latest payouts for some others are:

Outback - $3.3 million
Chic-fil-a - $3.005 million
Gator - $2.5 mil
Music City - $1.6 mil
Independence - $1.1 mil

Does anyone know anything about bowl payouts and if LSU could negotiate more if they turned down the Capital One Bowl for a Cotton Bowl bid?

Payout for bowl does not go directly to LSU, though. All SEC bowl payouts go to the SEC and is divided 13 ways. That said, a school does get more "travel money" when they play in a higher payout bowl.

Regardless, the difference in payout between Cap1 and Cotton is just over a million dollars ($3 million vs $4.2 million). That money does not go directly to the school, though, so the conversation about "money to LSU" as it relates to bowl payout is moot.

FWIW, Outback and Cotton have the same payout at $3mil.

Have to split the money among all SEC schools anyway so who cares.

doesn't the money shared with the SEC anyway? I don't think LSU loses any money in this situation...

Also, we can win the Cap One bowl. I don't like our chances of winning against the Big 12 as much.

If you aren't going to a BCS bowl, it really doesn't matter if the payout is 3 or 4 million. SEC splits it anyway.

Why 13??
Does the 13th portion go to the SEC itself, their offices and what not?

It was my understanding that a team couldn't go to the same bowl two years in a row like that unless it's a BCS bowl. I may be way off here, has anyone else heard this before?
PS please excuse if this is obvious but I don't remember going to the same bowl two years in a row

teams can certainly go to bowls consecutively... but it's not something the bowls necessarily desire if there's another solid option

If the money is split evenly, wouldn't we still get more money? Not as much, though.

Texas A&M/Nebraska versus LSU in Cotton would be great.

LSU versus Michigan State in Capital One is a great matchup too.

No matter what, any potential bowl matchup for LSU is pretty intriguing...

The SEC splits it, but I heard it is a "pro rated" split depending on what bowl you go to. From what I understand (I could be wrong) the money is split 13 ways with each school getting an equal share of that money and the school who actually goes to that bowl gets the 13th (extra) share.

For example. If LSU goes to the Cotton Bowl and that Bowl pays out 3 million, it is split into 13 shares of $230K with all the SEC schools receiving $230K and LSU receiving $460K.
If South Carolina goes to the Capital One Bowl, the 4.25 million is split into 13 shares of $326K with all the SEC schools receiving $326K and USCe getting $652K.

When you are talking about less than $100,000 take home pay, other factors such as opponent and ability of the fans to travel become as important as the money. A million dollars split 12-13 ways doesn't leave a lot...relatively.

So wouldn't this lead us to believe that LSU would go to the Cotton bowl over the Cap One?

Understood. But, if we are cutting academic programs and in the current economy, we can use every dollar we can get.

Either way, I wish we were talking about how much BCS bowls pay out.

The money goes to the conference and it is split 13 ways with the 13th to the conference. Bowl teams are given a travel allowance that is in addition to their share that depends on the bowl payout. A BCS team gets something like 2M or so. You could consider it an extra share, but it ain't an equal one. For the smaller bowls it's probably bigger than a prorated share for the nonparticipants.

I wouldn't think so b/c it's still an SEC school getting the money. If it's LSU or Arkansas it still goes into the big pot for the conference.

Hell, at this point after the way the LSU offense has played this season I'm just ecstatic LSU isn't going to the Independence Bowl or New Mexico Bowl! Sugar Bowl woulda been nice, but...

Cotton...Capital One (Tangerine)...Outback...Chick-Fil-A (Peach) Hell yeah! And as already pointed out the SEC splits the revenue so LSU won't be getting all that much $ from that one game; however, 10 of 12 SEC teams are bowl eligible and pretty good bet all 10 will go to Bowl games and THAT will be a chunk of change into LSU's bank account. Call it "NCAA socialism" but it pays to be in the SEC sometimes.
