I think that the 1st concert I ever attended was Al Jarreau at the New Orleans World's Fair in 1984. I was only 7 years old but remember parts of the show.

I went to my 1st LSU game in 1985 (Wichita St.) and have always heard Al Jarreau's 'Boogie Down' often during LSU football games. I just looked it up and see that the song was written in 1983.

Since most of the LSU band songs have been around much longer (i.e. most since Huey P. Long), I was curious if anyone knows the story behind why this one became ingrained with LSU football games. I only make about one game per year now and can't recall if they still play it as often as they used to.

*Also curious about the connection to 'Hey Baby', which I always enjoy hearing during football games. Seems like it's always played at the right time when the crowd is in a good mood.

I was in the band from 2006-2010, and I don't have a direct answer for why Boogie Down has stood the test of time for 30 years. I think it has kinda taken on a life of its own- mainly due to that sonic *punch* at the beginning of the song. It was always one of my favorites to play since you could hit that note as LOUD as possible. It's a fun tune!

The audio isn't very good in that clip but I think it does a good job of showing off the band hitting the note at full volume.

That was my all time favorite pep rally we performed!! What a cool venue. I remember that group of musicians too - really talented trumpet players that could blast those high notes.

I was in TGBFTL from 84-88. Yes, we always played it. We played it a lot in the basketball band. I think the arrangement was written by Gary Langford who was Jazz director at UF. He had very close ties to Mr. Wickes and Linda Moorhouse. Gary was a great arranger. I'm pretty sure he's still around but, quite elderly.

I could be wrong but, that's what I seem to recall.

On a side note to that video. Think about how much weight was placed on that balcony. I couldn't imagine it being built to hold that much weight.

That's the punch that the Southern, Grambling, St. Aug type bands hit during the entirety of every song, and I believe it is what makes them so enjoyable and fun to watch.

As a former 1st trumpet and eventual "screamer", i can verify that it's been quite the popular tune among the band. I was in TB from 99-02. We took some liberties with that tune that we wouldn't necessarily take with other tunes. Busting out that first note an octave up and just going higher and higher. It was definitely fun. :-)

Agreed! Of course I'm biased since it was my senior year and Linda/Frank's last year. We had a sound that year that hasn't been matched since IMO.

I have a shared Dropbox folder with 30+ years worth of GBFTL tunes, and it's in there. If you're willing to post your email address I'll send you a link so you can access it all.

My fave GBFTL tune. Its a shame the only time you can hear it is 45 min before kickoff.

"Hey Baby" is the same to LSU as "Sweet Caroline" is to the Red Sox.

I think that's it. I love that part.

It used to always be the first song the band played after they marched in and settled into place. It was like a big announcement, "We're here. Let's party."

Gives me chills hearing that as much as the four big notes.
