What he means is, spread-type offenses could have proliferated a decade early. And yes, that is plausible.

He didn't really run anything like a spread offense. His philosophy was probably more ground and pound old Big 10 style than Les.

I remember Don Barthel's dad coming into Bob Sale Camera Shop and telling me what had happened. At that time Bob was not a big LSU fan, though that would later change when Rob was ready to play college football.

I also remember Paul Dietzel (sp) later telling the press that he was in somewhat of a panic to figure out who was going to coach the team with signing day so near. He had actually considered doing it himself, but decided that age and his duties as AD would make it too much. Consequently, that Saturday morning he called across campus and asked Jerry Stovall to come to his office.

The Tigers were very competitive(2 SEC titles)for most of the 80's. It's easy to imagine that a coach of Rein's calibre could have led LSU to the lofty heights they've attained under Saban and Miles.

It's amazing to think how, not that long ago, LSU actually hired a head football coach who had basically no coaching experience AT ALL.

the best part of the whole segment was when the wife and daughter came back to Tiger Stadium for a game in 2014 and they were announced and recognized on the field .... they stated that they really didn't think people would even remember him - However Tiger Stadium erupted for them with cheers and a standing ovation and the whole student section was bowing !!! WOW - shite was

Totally agree, my problem is why did we have to wait so many years to do this? This always disappointed me since the day it occurred.

I recall that, in the days leading up to the announcement of Rein as HC, Dietzel would not say who it was but did say 'he has the look of eagle!'. And so he did.

I was in the ninth grade at Denham Springs. One day during PE class Bo Rein walks into the gym to visit Coach Wax and All American linebacker Kelvin Robinson. Everyone stopped as time seemed to stand still and you could have heard a pin drop while Bo was in the gym. The amazing thing about Bo's visit was that two weeks earlier the Bear was in visiting Kelvin and only a few people noticed. Even at 34 years old Bo Rein seem to command more respect than Bear Bryant and his houndstooth hat. LSU lost a great coach.
