Sam played better than Burns and Ryan

What a high bar

All three of them are terrible at worst, and barely serviceable for our goals (even then only if surrounded by actual quality) at best.

That’s not good news in this case. We return the worst defense in the history of our school.

Well that is a scary thought. Hopefully the new guy will run toward contact.

Doesn’t matter if House stays.

So I’m confused. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

I think you need to move it up a level and talk to “the defensive teacher“.

How is having all of the defensive players returning a good thing? Do you really think the lone reason the defense was horrible is coaching? Coaching contributed but it isn’t the only reason they sucked.

Well, for one thing I look at it as a great sign as far as locker-room culture.

We used to have a load of guys ready to opt out and declare for the draft as soon as they were eligible, and it didn't matter if they were projected as 1st rounders or undrafted free agents. That mindset seems to be gone now, and I am glad. I'd rather have guys less talented that want to work and play, instead of someone who thinks his 4/5 star rating is a lottery ticket to be cashed in 3 yrs.

If nothing else it's good for depth and players can improve

Let's say we return 10 players and only 7/10 retain their starting positions because they get passed on the depth chart by someone else on the roster or an incoming transfer. That's an improvement in 3 positions and possibly more assuming some of the 7 that retained their positions also improved.

What would suck would be losing 8 out of 11 because the guys behind them weren't good enough to get on the field

Good post. I have coached at lower levels and have a hard time understanding why we were miserable at setting the edge all year. The coaches absolutely saw this. The players knew their job. Yet we consistently failed. This is harder to understand than missing tackles or gap assignments. I thought Savion was going to be good this year, but is still trying to figure out how to set the edge.
