Key has been tremendous and even more so now we have a scheme that can focus on his strengths (Imagine Mingo under Aranda)

But as many of you may remember, he sort of came out of nowhere in signing day. Was Key the best last minute sign under Miles?

If not who?

I remember Valentine was also a steal but it took him two years just to get here.

Excuse my ignorance. Only been following recruiting for like 4/5 years now.

Really wish he would have made it in the league. Him and mingo were excellent an excellent tandem

I would have to put Harvey Williams right up there in the top recruiting steals for LSU. I mean everyone thought he was a lock for Texas A&M. Story goes he was walking up to podium to make his announcement and the high school band was playing the Aggies fight song and he was so sick of hearing the song he made the decision to go to LSU at that point. Not certain if that is even remotely true but a damn good story and was a helluva player for us.

Jamal Adams came out of nowhere since most of the fans who follow recruiting thought Hootie Jones was going to sign.

He (Adams) was part of the 5 for 5 crew so I don't think he qualifies as a signing day steal

Edit: I was talking about Jamal Adams but I can see where I should have used a proper noun.

Key wasn't a signing day steal, he committed a couple weeks before on TV.

This. He said it himself on the radio several times that on signing day he was intending on signing with TAMU. Then just at the last minute sent his papers to LSU.

Aggies still talk about that as being one of the most embarrassing moments in their recruiting history.

The staff cooled on Hootie a while before signing day, especially when they locked up Adams.

Nope.

Wrong year. 5 for 5 was in 2014. The Leonard Fournette class.

Speedy
Gerald Willis
Fournette
Jamal Adams
Tony Brown

Edit: thought you were replying to the OP and Arden. You were correct about Adams.

A diamond in the rough =/= a steal. Key was still a steal. He decommitted from South Carolina in January, took an official to LSU 2 weeks later, closed with an official visit to USCe, and unexpectedly committed to LSU 2 days before signing day.
