Being mediocre and not winning championships. They're not the same thing!

A lot of people throw around the word mediocre when talking about our football/baseball teams and coaches and I am not sure they understand the term.

me·di·o·cre
?mede'ok?r/Submit
adjective
of only moderate quality; not very good.

Our baseball and football programs compete at the highest level available in college athletics and consistently are ranked 15th or better year in and year out. In football there are 128 Division 1 teams (FBS). In baseball there are 298. Putting us roughly in the top 10 percent year in and year out. Hardly middle of the pack. LINK This does not happen on player talent alone, but for arguments sake if it did who do you think identifies the talent? Do I want championships? Of course. I also realize there is a long way to fall and appreciate that year in and year out the teams I love compete at a level that keeps them in championship conversations in the first place.

LSU: Where 15th Place Is Just Good Enough

That's got a nice ring to it, could be this year's TAF fundraising slogan.

You have to understand something about the LSU fan base. There is the national champion and last place. There is no in between. Even if we are a fantastic team and lose in the national championship game on a crazy fluke thing, we're still last place and might as well be Louisiana College.

ETA: We are the equivilant of the kid that is losing at halftime and says "I'm taking my ball and going home" instead of just enjoying the game.

We all want the win. But a lot of you jackasses act like it is our God given birthright to be undefeated national champions in every major sport.

As far as football goes people expect better than 8-4 seasons and mid tier bowls considering the amount of NFL players LSU produces. Oh and they also expect to see LSU put together a better passing game than a high school team. This isn't an absurd expectation by any means.

Our fans who say our teams are mediocre more than likely haven't accomplished much in their life, meaning they have to project onto a university sports team and live vicariously through them.

Dude, you can eliminate at least the bottom 3/4ths of the 128 division 1 programs in football; there are that many programs who don't have the resources, the commitment and the fan base and support that LSU has. By my math, that leaves about 32 teams that take football seriously. If 15th out of 32 isn't mediocrity, then you are right, i don't understand the term.

We should demand more; we pay top dollar for coaches and we have great recruiting classes year in and year out. To settle for mediocrity is just plain naive and lazy.

This dead horse has been thoroughly beaten ... but I believe the problem with football's underachievement and the fans' frustration under Miles was more about the WAY we lost rather than just the fact that we lost

This. People who aren't complete idiots should understand that we have top 3 baseball program resources (and that's being conservative IMO, our attendance and program success overall since 1990 is by far #1) and top 10 football program resources. We have the conference, fanbase, location, money, extreme fertile recruiting territory with no other major in-state schools to compete with, among other things. We should be elite year in and year out and we would be if the limpdick idiot politicians who run Louisiana were just 1% competent and didn't completely frick things up as much as possible.

I can just as easily take that in the other direction and say that the fans who are willing to accept less than excellence do so because they're not ambitious and are used to settling for less in their own lives.

I think you are confusing expectation with frustration. When nearly every program in the country fields a team with a better qb than ours, it is hard not to be frustrated. The amount of talent we've had at every other position has been an embarrassment of riches with nothing to show for it. But Les is gone, so let's move on.

I don't feel like our baseball team has underachieved, they have just not had the pitching depth needed to win. Gorilla ball is over. I am impressed with our pitching staff this year, and I think we can win it all with a little luck this year.

The problem is, in trying to make this argument, all you do is fuel the perception. The few most vocal posters on the rant are a fraction of a minority of the entire fan base. That's why they're here. This is the rant.

quote:

rant

v.intr.
1. To speak or write in an angry or emotionally charged manner; rave.
2. To express at length a complaint or negative opinion

n.
1. Angry, emotionally charged, or tediously negative speech or writing

Let the resounding gongs and clanging cymbals vent their frustrations here and accept their right to do so. But don't give them validation by trying to argue with them.
