Basketball: LSU (14-10,4-6) vs Mississippi State (19-6,6-4) | Tuesday 8PM | TV:ESPNU

*Its Valentine’s day, so bring the lady to the ball game. I know I’m bringing my lady out to lunch so we can get a PMAC hotdog for dinner*

SoS’s Power Rankings 2/12/12
1. Kentucky
2. Florida
3. Miss St
4. Vanderbilt
5. LSU
6. Tennessee
7. Arkansas
8. Alabama
9. Ole Miss
10. Auburn
11. Georgia
12. South Carolina

General Overview

LSU’s in conference strength of schedule is 3rd in the country and 2nd in the conference behind South Carolina according to CBSSports.com. It won’t take a hit when LSU (14-10, 4-6) takes on #23 Mississippi State (19-6, 6-4) on Tuesday night at the PMAC. The ESPNU coverage starts at 8:00 PM.

In their first meeting at “The Hump” it was the Arnett Moultrie show. He went for 28 points and 12 rebounds. LSU was able to keep the game close and had a chance to win in the final minute. They were able to make 11-21 from beyond the arc, which has been their best output all season from 3 pt land. LSU only had 9 turnovers, while turning Mississippi St over 17 times. The real difference was Arnett Moultrie. LSU had no answer for the 6’11” Junior Forward.

Just like LSU’s Justin Hamilton, Moultrie is a transfer to the SEC who has taken the league unexpectedly by storm. His ability to get rebounds, score, and shoot with his big frame has made him nearly impossible to stop. It will be on Hamilton to contain him while adding some major points himself. Hamilton was able to score 21 against Alabama on Saturday and looks to continue his offensive production after a quick turnaround.

LSU was pleased to get Stringer going on Saturday where he was able to hit a three pointer and add 15 total points. Stringer was able to get 17 in the first meeting between these two teams as he came off the bench when Johnson gave Eddie Ludwig the start. It was Andre’s highest scoring output since his feinting spells that cost him 5 games in December. He has hit 17 of his last 18 free throws and has only missed 6 all season. Stringer has driven the ball to the hoop more in the past 5 games and it has turned into points during a stretch where Stringer has gone ice cold shooting from distance.

Schedule and SEC stakes

With LSU only a game behind 5th place in the SEC, the Tigers look to continue winning and compete for the 1st round by in the SEC tournament that Miss St owns position for right now. State sits at 4th in the SEC and in a great position to make the NCAA Tournament. LSU’s last 5 games all come against teams at or below .500 in conference play giving LSU a big chance to make a splash in the conference. After the State game LSU’s next two opponents have a combined 4 SEC wins this season. Having this stretch to end the season can give the Tigers some confidence going into the post season.

Thanks Hotep. I had it right in the text but I had it copied and pasted wrong from my template... Trying to write too fast.

In the last few games, LSU has been able to really score-at-will inside. That "likely" won't be the case this game as State's two post guys can be dominant. I say can be, because we all know about Sidney and his propensity to be lazy. LSU should get some good looks from outside this game (Stringer and Hickey lead the way in the first meeting). Hopefully they can break out of their shooting slumps. Also, State shot nearly 20 more FT's than LSU in the first game.

That is also normal for the Bulldogs. They are 3rd in the country on allowing free throw attempts/shot attempts. If we can get Moultrie or Sidney in foul trouble LSU should be able to do some work down low on backups.

Seems like this should be pretty straight forward... Stick the more athletic big man on him (JOBIII) and let him go to work.

Especially due to his stigma of being a bit lazy. Probably just gets tired easy cause he is like 900 pounds of bad weight...

Im a little worried though cause they haven't lost back to back games yet this year.

Propensity is not close to a strong enough word.

In the Ole Miss game (in the first half no less), somebody got a rebound over him.... he immediately waved to the bench and shuffled up the court waving to the bench for a sub while Bost weaved around him with the basketball.

He had barely made it across half court before State scored and they were coming back the other way. The Ole Miss guy goes straight to the block, catches the pass and laid it in.

Sidney never made it back past the three point line.

Stansbury called timeout.

I wonder How good our team would be if we did not have midgets for guards'.

, can you at least save the bitching and bagging on the team for after a loss? is that too much to ask?

I really hope if the Tigers win this game, they start getting the respect that this team deserves. They have had a tough road, but they have competed and played hard. They are fun to watch and work together.

Anyone who has a chance to see them play and doesn't is just being dumb.

A majority of the "basketball" fans.

But this
quote:

They are fun to watch

is more true for this season than some of the last few, if you ask me. The brand of ball TJ runs isn't exactly exciting, but it has had a couple of flashes from Ham, JOB, and Hickey, as well as Storm and the guards (Turner/Stringer/Isaac).

My favorite thing about this is the completely different styles you see in each of these three.

Hamilton will do a ton of things right. Get rebounds, play fundamental ball, and make some finesse shots that are just beautiful.

JOB will make the plays that show up on ESPN and the plays that make the crowd go crazy. Blocks, dunks, etc.

Hickey is a super quick guy that can kiss the glass with a floater in the lane that makes me ask what if he had a few more inches... But overall its still really fun to watch.

I agree that TJ doesnt necessarily produce a style of basketball that it "fun" to watch, but he does allow players to make plays and with the type of players we have it is a fun style of basketball.

Hamilton dominated Sidney in the first game. We just didn't get the ball to him often enough. If we feed Hamilton we get Sidney on the bench with foul trouble early.
