A few 60 yard dash times from the website Prep Baseball Report.

Sometimes players are running faster than it looks and vice versa.

These are numbers coming out of high school….

Jones - 7.18
Morgan - 7.16
Jobert - 7.51
Pearson - 6.66
Frey - 7.04
Crews - 7.20

It's important to know when those times were recorded relative to where they are now physically.

Jones may have run that time when he was a sophomore in high school but since then he has strapped a refrigerator to his back.

Not sure how accurate that is. Perfect Game has Dylan Crews clocked at a 6.63 his junior year of high school. No way I would ever believe Dylan was a 7.2 runner.

Doesn’t matter. Just hit. We had a pretty slow team this year

Beloso and White couldn’t run out of sight in a week….but they could hit

Neither were asked to play outfield

didn't even know this was a thing for baseball so I googled it. Figured I'd post for others like me:

The 60-yard dash is used to measure speed in baseball because it takes into account both short bursts of speed as well as long-distance sprinting.

A player with a time under 7 seconds is considered an average baseball player; a player with a time between 6.3 and 6.7 seconds has exceptional speed and any player under 6.3 seconds is among the fastest you will find.

I was under the assumption he would be mainly looked at for 1b or DH. I guess not

And Jones won't be either. People keep clinging to this notion because of a mis-speak by Ben McDonald.

like my pappy told me when I was a pup, if you can hit, pitch, or catch(as in catcher,) they can't keep you off the field

People act like there is no way that he could confuse two giant, red headed, giant, freshman catchers.

Exactly. If they would just think about it for a second 1 was an offensive tackle football recruit (Jones) and the other was a dual threat style QB recruit (Frey). Which of those would you think Jay would mention as being a corner OF in the future.

That’s my assumption as well. I could have been more clear. I don’t actually think he’ll be asked to play outfield. My point was just that, hypothetically speaking, his speed (or lack of speed) would be relevant.

I can’t hit, catch or pitch, but I can post!

It seems like it would be pretty easy to find a quote or interview from Jay if this was really mentioned as many times as people say it was.

There was a point in time this season where Jones was mashing, we were looking for ways to keep him in the lineup, and we were also looking for consistency from a corner outfielder yet he didn’t play one single inning out there that I’m aware of.
