I’ve been either playing, coaching or watching baseball now for the better part of 37 years. Growing up I was obsessed with the game.

You could say I’m an old school traditionalist, but there are some new rules that I do agree with.

In recent years new stats and lingo have come about that I think are mostly garbage, but whatever, it gives nerds that never played something to analyze.

BUT… This year I started hearing the term backside to describe opposite field hitting. frick whoever started this and it doesn’t even make sense. I mean, think about it, you’re facing the opposite field at the plate. Your backside is actually pulling the ball.

I know downvotes from the nerds are coming. I don’t care, it had to be said.

Heard it said today on Musso's podast:

LSU would not make the SEC tournament as it stands now.

The last time LSU did not make Hoover and the NCAA tournament in the same season was 2011.

This is not a good ball club.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in south Louisiana and played ball my whole life and have always called going oppo hitting backside. Never thought about your backside facing the other way though lol. It was just pull side and backside.

I also grew up in South LA. I’ve played and coached all over the state. I have also played in different states. I’ve read books, attended camps, watched videos and thousands of games at every level.
Not once before this year have I heard the term backside used in reference to going opposite field.

I just hate the word “velo.”
Short word? Speed.
Long word? Velocity.

They’re both ok to use.

But it’s totes not apropro to sound like Chi O in the press beaux.

Interesting. I’m 41 and also played and coached all over. Maybe we’ve played against each other lol. I always make my players go backside for their first round of bp. Their 2 strike approach is to look to drive a fastball backside and adjust to the offspeed. I’m pretty dumb about a lot of things but baseball isn’t one of them. I never paid attention to who’s used the term or not and I’m assuming I picked it up somewhere over my career. Didn’t know it was controversial lol.

Why backside instead of opposite field or oppo?

Backside taco sounds gay

Which hip is closest to the catcher. The back hip or the front hip? When you go oppo do you let the ball get deeper? Towards the back hip?

And I’ve heard backside for as long as I can remember and I’m over 50

Maybe you’re right but a 41 year old man using LOL 2 times in one post is controversial… lol
