I was trying to figure out who would be designated as the winning pitcher in last night's game. I checked and it is Poche.

What's the formula? I thought it was who was the pitcher when the winning team scored one more run than the losing team ended up with. But since LSU scored their 5th run in the 6th inning, that would seem to have been Cartwright.

Is the fact that Poche faced one batter in the 6th what gives him the win? Or maybe the fact that it was tied when he left the game?

Just curious how they decide these kinds of things.

If he leaves the game with the lead, and the team never relinquishes the lead, he remains the pitcher of record.

quote:

SECTION 25—winning and losing pitchers
a. For all games of eight or more innings, a starting pitcher
must pitch at least five complete innings to receive credit as the
winning pitcher. For all games of fewer than eight innings, the
starting pitcher must pitch at least four innings to get credit for
the win. Additionally, the winning pitcher’s team must be in the
lead when he is replaced and must remain in the lead for the
rest of the game.

a starter must pitch 5 innings for him to be considered the pitcher of record for a win.

IF the starter leaves before the 5th or leaves without the lead, than who ever is pitching when the winning team takes the lead becomes the winner.

So let's say LSU trails tonight 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning. Stall relieved Lange after 2 outs, and gets one out. LSU scores two in the bottom of the 8th taking a 4-3 lead. Stallings closes it LSU Wins.

Stroll would get the win because he was the last pitcher to pitch before LSU took the lead, even though he only got 1 out.

Unless the coaches agree before the game. happens a lot in mid week games.. Starter will go 3 innings and get the win.

Simple, until you tried to explain it.

First, neither "Stall" nor "Stroll" will be pitching in the bottom of the eighth, as LSU will be batting then, and neither of them play for LSU.

I could see the situation where Collin Strall would relieve Lange with 2 outs in the TOP of the 8th, throw one pitch and get a ground out to end the inning.

LSU then proceeds to plate two in the bottom of the 8th.

THEN, after Stallings closes it out with a perfect 1-2-3 in the 9th, STRALL would collect the victory.

Seems unfair at times, but that's how it is. Kind of like being a Cubs fan.
