Are conference championship games going to continue?

Seems strange to me that they would continue w conference championship games w the 12 team playoff coming up. It has the real possibility to knock some teams out of the 12 team playoff and get other teams in that didn't play in their conference championship game (i.e. Alabama from 2011). On the other side of the fence it will also give teams (like Iowa and Louisville this season) a shot at the 12 team tournament if they win. Also you would have the situation (like the pros) where some teams will/may sit their star players and save them for playoffs if they know they are in win or lose. Conference championships IMHO need to go away. Pros? Cons? Anybody give a flip one way or the other?

only thing a conf champ game will give you is the coveted bye but even if you don't get a bye you may get a home playoff game which is not a bad consolation
they need to end conf champ games and make it a 16 team playoff instead

+1. I agree with that. It's a proven commodity that works!

As of now they are set to continue, too much money for them not to be played. They will basically be a de facto "playoff" game to determine seeding. The problem that can happen is it is entirely possible you could see the same teams play 3 times in a season. For example next year, the big 10 is going without divisions, meaning OSU and Michigan would meet again in the conference championship game using this year's records. They could then both make the playoffs and potentially play each other for the 3rd time

I agree with they need to go away with the new games and schedule coming to sec, hate it but I think a conference record needs to be the playoffs

I think they will go by the wayside in the next few years so that conferences can get more teams into the playoff

This is a shite show waiting to happen. Conference championship games are pointless with the new playoff and need to go away.

To the extent that the broadcasting networks can make money televising the games, they will remain.
Next question...

no
they have no purpose or reason any more, they are just a liability to hurt teams by adding an extra game

Meaningless going forward but it’s all about $$$ so if fans will continue to pay, they will stay.

It’s why the sec eliminated divisions
The top two teams in the sec are likely locks for the playoffs even with a loss in that game
