I know a lot of us have done some research on Dave Aranda and feel like we know we have a great DC. Yesterday I had the privilege of hearing him speak at the Angelo Coaches Clinic (San Angelo, TX). He didn't speak until 3:30, but the dude showed up in the morning, listened to every presenter, and took notes. All of the other speakers showed up spoke and left. I was so impressed that a guy at his level would do that.

Anyways, the dude is ridiculously smart, as you would imagine a D1 DC to be. One thing I got out of it that applies to us is rarely did he bring 5-man pressure. He said why buy an $8 cheeseburger when you can get one for $2? He's going to disguise pressure to take advantage of blocking schemes. Thinking about what our athletes will do in this system is crazy. Just thought I'd pass along. He was a great representative of LSU.

Reading about him in articles since we hired Dave, this doesn't surprise me in the least.

I get a boner every time I read about him. I'm almost 100% positive he will be making monsters here at LSU until someone comes to him for a HC job.

God I hope he stays here until Les hangs it up and Dave's promoted, if he turns out like I think.

I can def see him being a HC one day. He listened to offensive and defensive presentations. The entire Iowa staff, including Ferentz, stayed to listen to him speak and came to the breakout session. One Iowa coach told him he was glad he left Wisconsin because he gave them fits!

Yes but in the end don't they both do the same thing? End your hunger?

Yall are building this dude up big time. I think he is a great hire and will do well but the first time the defense gives up 400 yards people on here will be calling for his head. Book it.

as much as I hated the Steele hire, I'm on the complete opposite end of the spectrum on this one. I have complete faith he's going to restore our D back to the punch our opponents right in the mouth days. I respect what Chavis did in his time here, but felt in the last few years we lost that rep of being so physical on D you'd see the effects on our opponent even into their next game. Chavis also became complacent, Aranda is clearly still very hungry and is already pretty widely regarded across the country as a great defensive mind, I haven't heard a bad word about him.

Aranda + Coach O = Pain for offenses!!

Even great defenses will give it up from time to time, see Bama here.

He mentioned a game when he was at Wisconsin that the defense didn't do very well. He said they had a great game plan, the problem was he was the only one that knew it. Doesn't matter what you know, it only matters what you can teach.

He also said when he first got to Wisconsin he tried to do with them what he did at Utah St. Players were completely different, he couldn't do with them what he had done before. He's smart enough to know to not force a square peg in a round hole, but humble enough to know it's a players game.

Yep the old saying, "You can lead a horse to the water but you can't drink for it".

Aranda knows what he has here. He must wake up every morning with a smile on his face.

I went to the LSU coaches clinic a couple months ago and he was excellent during his session. He also loves clinics and the coaching community, which is probably why he attended the entire day at the one you went to.

The guy is extremely smart. I couldn't follow everything he said because I don't coach defense, but it was still impressive just to hear all of his knowledge of the game.

You missed the point. It's the same burger. Only the price has changed.

His point is that by disguising your rush you can rush 4 people and get a 4 on 3 matchup. This is because a couple of your hybrids fake the pass rush and drop into coverage forcing a couple of linemen, and maybe a running back, to commit to blocking a pass rush that never comes.

In this way you get the benefits of a six man rush and only actually rush four.

I'm going to be defensive coordinator for the first time this year, and I couldn't dream of knowing what he knows. I heard Saban speak at this clinic about secondary play, and Aranda's presentation about attacking blocking schemes was just as good.

Exactly right! He showed numerous videos where the o-line fan blocked their protection. The tackle and guard went wide to block what would be our F-backer and end, but the F sank and our Mack backer ran through the B gap untouched. It was beautiful! Can see Beckwith and/or Riley doing it.
