It passed "dump" and kept going. "Dump" is now way behind in the rear view mirror.

Here's some quotes from Expedia:

“Would avoid at all cost”

“Classic Roach Moterl”

“Horrible and Very Unclean!”

“Holy Crap”

Expedia

Got two stars.

I always stay in Montgomery. More/better places to stay. More/better things to do. It's a short drive to Auburn. The town of Auburn is pretty much a dump.

i have stayed in the days inn next door twice. that knights inn is the definition of a roach motel. stay in montgomery, seriously. montgomery is 45 mins aways. opelika is 25 minutes away. the 20 minutes more will save you from getting an infection.

I used to a run a bar in auburn and in Alabama you must buy your liquor from the abc store. So you get to see what other bars purchase because it's all lined up in the back. There is a bar next door that sells nothing but mad dog, boones farm, roses, etc... Just to give you an idea of the area in opelika.

If you can't get a room in a decent hotel you should either stay in Montgomery or Columbus, GA. Both are short drives(1 hour or so) away. Scottish Inns and Knights Inns are disgusting! Everywhere!

ETA: if this is your absolute only option, stop at Wal-Mart and purchase the following items:

1. Large can of Lysol
2. Small can of Raid/Bengal
3. Rubber sheet and cotton sheets for every bed
4. Shower shoes
5. Rubber gloves

6. Bring your own pillows and blankets

Use all 6!

If you can't find closer in the areas I suggested. Exits 51-58. Stay in Montgomery. It's easier than Columbus. Or stay up a ways in Lagrange ga area on I 85.

Place is gross, I stayed there when I was a student. That said, you are closer than most people to campus and you won't be in the room much during the weekend. We weren't about to drive 45 minutes so we ended up staying there. The bar next door is comical really, some serious white trash coming and going from that place. You'll survive and probably have a fun weekend, just don't expect much from the room!

ETA: I slept on an air mattress so I can't speak for the gross beds, but others are probably right in suggesting bringing your own pillows, blankets, etc

Avoiding it in the first place = better option. Do what we did once...rent an RV. We parked overnight in some hospital parking lot...not sure if that's an option anymore...and drove to the game in the morning.
