Where did you stay. Is it a good away game trip?

I'm hoping to go this year too.

Yes a few months ago it is pretty nice for a college town.

Compared to most college towns in the SEC, it is a crap hole. Reminds me a lot of Starkville.

I am in College Station now. I was working here during the football season last year. Kyle Field is a terrific venue for college football.
There are all of the hotel and motel chains that you would expect. They are all close to the campus. College station is just not that big. Plenty of food choices.
All of the rooms may already be booked. Last week, on 1/3/11, when I checked in wearing my LSU gear, the clerk told me that they had completely booked all of their rooms for the LSU weekend within a few days of the schedule being announced. That they had never filled up so fast to her knowledge.
There are plenty of towns close by. Good luck.

Dead on.

It isn't anywhere close to being as bad as Stark-ghanistan. It is a pretty big town - close to 200,000 and 50,000 students. Hotels - poor. Hyatt place and Sheraton four points are the best. Not kidding. Bars- Dixie Chicken is the spot. There are others in the Northgate area which is across the street from campus. Good barbecue in town as you might expect other than that food is unremarkable. Game day atmosphere is pretty good. Kyle field is big and on par with other SEC venues. Houston is an hour and a half away so that is an option if hotels are booked. Downtown Bryan is an option too. Older downtown area with a couple of hotels that are older and have some charm. Fans are heavy with Corps types. Not too welcoming or cool.

As far as a college life it's different from most anywhere else. aTm has a culture that is unique, but if you can put up with the aggie crap and embrace it for a night it can be a lot of fun. As far as Kyle Field, it is a pretty cool venue. I was there for aTm vs. UT when colt mccoy was a senior and it was ELECTRIC... one of the top 10 atmospheres I've been in (LSU grad 2010 who has been to most SEC stadiums). I'd put it behind LSU and Bama in the SEC west, but ahead of the rest.

Agree re placement in the west. Overall I put it behind the swamp, neyland, uga, and about even with gamecocks.

how close to the stadium or the bars are these two hotels? I wanna make this trip.

It's only a little over an hour from Houston, and you'll have no problem finding hotels on the west side of Houston (I-10 or Northwest 290).

I went for the KU game this year and stayed at the Hampton. It looks like it's already booked up for LSU though. Gameday was pretty boring but it was an11:30 kickoff. I watched the Corps walk in the stadium but wasn't impressed.

As I happen to live here, I think its a great place. Lived in Houston at one time and this place beats it hands down. Austin should be declared a federal disaster area.
Went to my first game at Kyle this year when they played Baylor. Most of the hotels filled up within 3 hours of the schedule being announced for the LSU game tho. I think you will find it a great game day atmosphere.
The bars are right across the street from campus, the hotels are not. Will need transportation to get between the two.

Do you live in a van down by the river? WTF?

Both of my daughters are A&M grads so I am familiar with CS. Forget a room there, they are always booked by A&M people. Just drive to NW Houston along HWY 290 near FM 1960. There are plenty of Rooms there and it's about an hour and 15 mins. to CS from there. Good roads all the way to A&M. It's a great place to see the game. Stay away from the A&M Student section, they stand the entire game. "The Zone" is good, (The North End Zone) Vision is good and you will not have to stand or have the sun in your eyes.
The Aggie Fans are very friendly. You can Park your car @ the Mall and they bus you to Kyle Field FREE and bus you back right after the game. It is very orderly and organized. It is the only way to go there.

Ugh. Why is this a bad thing again?
it's a college football game, not a recital. Do you also tell people sitting around you not to be too loud?

There are a number of good places to eat.
Koppe Bridge for some really good hamburgers, chicken fried steak, etc.
Fuego for some incredible tacos, other interesting food choices. They have this white queso that's honestly to die for. They are also open 24 hours so it's a good place to hit after the bars close
Best BBQ in town IMO is CJs BBQ. Rudys is fairly good as well
Awesome Mexican food at Chuys
Northgate is pretty fun. Number of good bars. Dixie chicken, Obannons, Paddocks, Fitzwillys are all fun bars on northgate. There's a lot more but those are the ones I usually stick with. As was said northgate is right across the street from the northside of campus. Stadium is on the southside, but many walk there after games. Only about a 10 minute walk.
There is a free shuttle service from the mall to the games. Mall is a dump FYI. Don't waste your time there. There is more free parking close to campus and the stadium but you have to be familiar with the town to know where those are.
If your into history, the george bush library on the west side of campus might be worth a visit.
Kyle Field is a special place. The three decks on the east side of the stadium are for the students. We can fit around 30,000 students on that side. Students stand the entire game. The zone which is on the north side of the stadium and the west side is likely where you tigers will be able to get tickets. Kyle field is very old and outdated. We hope to begin construction after the 2013 season to renovate the stadium and turn it into a top venue aesthetically in the country. We had a number of 11am games this season. Those games suck. No energy in the stadium. As was said, many don't understand us Aggies and think we are weird. If you can get past all that and just come in with an open mind I think you will be able to enjoy the atmosphere and appreciate the gameday experience. A night game against the tigers will provide for an extremely loud and electric Kyle Field. It'll be a rough few years as we adjust to the quality of play and athletes in the SEC, but we look forward to hosting the elite teams in CFB here in college station. Here's to hoping we somehow beat the everliving hell out of the tigers next season at Kyle Field!
You'll find most Ags are pretty friendly. Show up early and come join in on our tailgates. We need you guys to teach us how it's done haha. Be patient, we will learn. Spence park and the area around Reed arena are the prime tailgating areas.
