Fastpitch softball scenario:
Bottom of last inning and tie ballgame. Runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Batter hits ball to deep right center field and center fielder makes a diving catch. Runner on 2nd tags up and scores winning run but runner on 1st never tagged and was between 1st and 2nd base when winning run scored so she takes off to celebrate with team at home plate. Other team appeals no tag at 1st base and runner is called out but umpires say run counts because the runner crossed the plate before the appeal was made. Is this the right call??

Yes. Run counts.

The base runner is forced out at first, so I would think the runner scoring from second doesn't count.

Disclaimer: Haven't umpired since the summer after high school

I just looked it up, and I'm wrong. Evidently the appeal is a "time play" instead of a force out, so the run stays on the board.

If the tag to first base was applied AFTER the runner from second scored then yes the run counts.

The appeal requires the base to be tagged and is not an automatic call by the umpire. The run counts and the out is considered a force/tag out in real time.

There is no force/tag out in real time. The game ended when runner crossed the plate.

There was no force.. batter never became a runner.. the runner on first chose to leave the base, not because of a force

I think he means the runner that left early is forced back to first base, but he can clarify I guess.

That is not a "force".. the base runner messed up and left a base.. a "force" is when the base runner has to leave the base... since there was no force, the run counts

I understand what a force is. I thought he was saying force to mean the runner that left early had to return to first base. Doesn't matter. frick it.

Right.... but if it were a "force" then the run would not count.. "force" is a very specific term in baseball, this case just is not a "force".. but the runner will have to tag if he wants to avoid being out.

Should have clarified. If the game was not over, the out would have occurred after the run scored.
