I will give the canidates:

Head coach:
Biff Jones
Edgar Wingard
Nick Saban
Dana Bible
Paul Dietzel

Most will likely vote for Charles McClendon, Bernie Moore and Bill Arnsparger.

Defensive Coordinator:
Charles McClendon
Will Muschamp
Pete Jenkins

Many will vote for Bo Pelini

Offensive Coordinator:
Jimbo Fisher
Ed Zaunbrecher

I could go back to the 30's, but many will not know the names.

Running Back:
Carl Maddox (Jimmy, Billy, Johnny, etc)

Quarterback:
Really oc has more to due with this position..
I would take Ed., but Wingard made Fenton.

Our most famous qb coach is Mack Brown

Offensive line:
Stacy Searel is a good vote here

But there is many that could be voted here dating to the 30's

Line coaches pre 1962 went both ways and we have a number of goods.

Tight Ends:
I liked Derek Dooley, very much like his father and a good coach.

Wide Recievers:
Stan Hixon

Defensive Line:
No joke Pete Jenkins hands down, anyone voting elsewise knows no LSU history.

Linebackers:
Will Muschamp
Mike Nolan
etc
On a linebacker coach there are different types 4-3 vs 5-2 vs 3-4 and on a 3-4 many schools had an outside backer coach and an inside backer coach.

Defensive back:
Nick Saban
May have been head coach, but he really coached the backs too.

Strength coach:
Mike Chambers
Tommy Moffitt
etc
But Roy Alvin should be our coach as he started it all.

Moffitt gets my vote.

Recruiting coordinator:
Sam Nader

Most will vote for Les Miles as best Head Coach.
No other LSU head coach has won as many games as Miles his 1st five years.
The answer is as simple as looking at his record since he came to LSU. Nothing else matters in that discussion.

paulu, can you step away from your obsession with hating Miles for at least a moment to discuss other topics related to LSU sports...or is your emotional investment so great it has rendered you incapable of a normal life as a sports fan?

Paula it does not work that way at all, in the early days of football in the South 10 game seasons are very rare....

and as the decades went on the average number of games goes up.

A 9 game season was the norm in the 1930's vs a 10 game season in the 50's vs 11 games of the 80's vs 12 game seasons of late, not counting Bowl games.

And the way we look at Bowl games today is far different form the 1980's vs the 1930's.

Bowl games were a reward for a good season, and that is all in the 30's - the mid 60's. It was a free trip and it was meant to be fun, that is all.

Football is always changing, but to say Miles is the best for the most wins doesn't work.

I left Miles off only because he is the coach today, I do not like to include the coaches we have now.

Miles will be one of our better coaches, best hummm doubtful, read about our past coaches and see what they did and had to overcome.

Yellowfever played a major role in our early history, and many a coach in our history were broken due to injuries and sickness.

this year will tell the tale...but what he did last year with Riley, Shep, Coleman and Cutrera was pretty amazing. Muschamp has come a long way, but he was pretty much Saban's secretary when he was here.

I also left Mike Douahue off as he was burned out by the time he got to LSU and LSU was not recruiting much at that time.

I left Gaynell Tinsley off, as I can see not way to place him in the top 10 coaches all time at LSU even with his total wins.

Joe Pitchard takes the fall for the 1909 team, but the talent in the backfield was gone for the most part of the 08 team, and Seip is still playing hurt (a little). Otherwise he would have been a long time coach at LSU.

McDowell is a very good coach and recruited well.

Man, this is so hard that I'm not going to even try.

But for those who do, here's a handy little reference from LSUSports.net: " LSU Football All-Time Assistant Coaches."

We also need to look at all that Miles had to overcome.
Katrina was horrific. We had a great year. Saban would have melted down under that environment probably losing several more games.
Living in the shadow of a predecessor. Much worse than living in the shadow of a dead man. Miles actually has to coach against his predecessor every year.
Walking away from your dream job. More to overcome than we realize despite the financial rewards.
Maintaining a program for more than 3 years is much more difficult than turning it around. Ask Bobby Bowden.

My emotional investment in LSU football declines annually as I age. We saw 2 BCNCs in 5 years. More than any of us expected to see in our lifetimes. To expect another BCNCS or double digit wins on a consistent basis is unrealistic.

Doc I got a better list of the all time assistant coaches going back to 1905 range.

Tommy Thomas of Baton Rouge High coached at LSU a number of seasons after he finshed at LSU, same with many off the 08 team like Baby.

Doc Fenton even helped at times.

And many a coach in the early days does not show up in Baton Rouge until 7 days or less before the first game, and those assistants are not even known today by LSU.

C. Smith should be remembered better by LSU than he is today.
