One benefit to Mainieri always collecting a staff of young puppets is that we'll develop a nice crop of LSU alums to pick from for future coaches.

That said, Cain, Ochinko, Gibbs and Fury on one staff is pretty laughable for the best program in college baseball.

Good for Dunn.

Didn't realize that Fury was out of the minors. Maxed out in AA after three seasons in the minors, not bad at all.

Pretty sure Gibbs and Ochinko are making zilch. Good do a lot worse than having those guys in the clubhouse. Better than having some old stiffs around, I'm sure the boys will be playing loose

The positions Ochinko and Fury hold are pretty much always going to be for guys like that. To an extent, the volunteer spot (Gibbs) is like that as well. But I don't necessarily disagree with your premise.

The NCAA needs to expand the paid coaching staff positions for baseball. It's absurd that they get two paid assistants and only three total that can recruit off campus. Basketball gets like 5.

I don't know why, but Ochinko always looked like a dickhead to me.

Having our hitting coach take up the volunteer spot is the only head scratcher.

The hitting coach at LSU makes $0 and has no coaching experience.

I'm not sure how Mainieri sells that to any non-pitcher recruit.

To be fair, neither did Cannizaro three years ago.

Doesn't the volunteer coach get paid though the LSU baseball camps or something along those lines? While not getting paid directly for coaching, its a way to compensate them a little?

It's weird but because of the backwards arse rules, it happens. Having a guy that's never run bases coaching third bothers me more.

The rule is designed to give you a paid pitching coach and a paid hitting coach.

We have a paid pitching coach and a paid first year recruiting coordinator.

Yeah, at most big time programs, the volunteer makes money off the programs camps, and other programs camps as well. There are a lot of other perks they can get too that make it a little easier to live on a "volunteer" salary, but it's not great.

It really needs to change. Nearly as much as the scholarship limit needs to change.

The rule is designed to stop programs that can afford more coaches from being able to hire them. Same small schools that don't fund all 11.7 scholarships also don't want coaching staffs expanded.

All of Alabama's 45 football analysts make more from the athletic department than their 4th ranking baseball coach.
