quote:I would say the pressure and booster scene at Notre Dame is more pronounced than it is at Washington. And Kelly navigated that for over a decade, getting pretty far for the quality of athlete he could get. We don't even know how DeBoer handles adversity... yet.
Y’all act like Kelly was some home run hire lol dude was at notre dame winning big games against Stanford and Navy

The guy must be a good coach, but there are a lot of good coaches out there, winning games in their own little bubble.
DeBoer's original bubble was the NAIA. He was 67-3 at Sioux Falls, where his little Baptist school played games every year against teams named (not kidding) Dana, Doane and Dordt.
He had one good year at Fresno State (think Bryan Harsin), and then he gets a superstar QB to join him at Washington for two higher profile seasons. But you saw his team in the championship game -- where would that Huskies team have finished in the SEC or the Big Ten?
There's no way they would have beaten Georgia.
But this is his resume. It doesn't scream Nick Saban 2.0 to me.
What was it that attracted all those 5-star recruits to Alabama? It wasn't the chance to get the same education as Forrest Gump. It wasn't even the chance to play where the great Bear Bryant once coached.
No, it was Saban. Saban won the championships. Saban stole the recruits. Saban made the SEC office fear him. Saban was the almighty.
And now he's gone, and the Gumps and the national media want us to think Kalen DeBoer -- just a few seasons removed from defeating Dana, Doane and Dordt -- is going to simply take the baton from Nick Saban and carry on.
They're dreaming. As of Wednesday, the world is entirely different in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
I would have been worried about Urban Meyer or Sarkisian getting the job, but not Kalen DeBoer.
The original poster was right: Alabama settled.

This is the sacrificial coach.
He could break out and make everyone look like geniuses.
But he's probably going to just be the guy gumps hate.

They didn’t get the coach they wanted in 2007. Remember they originally hired Rich Rod and he backed out.

Settled from whom?
He beat Lanning twice this year...
Josh Pate said Sexton made the world believe Alabama had to go 4 deep.
He said believe what you want..."I got it on good authority this was the coach Bryne wanted "

They used to have a Debose

One way I explain this in a conversation was Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Scottie Pippen was a very good player. To me that’s the new coach. Michael Jordan was the greatest of all time. And KD can be really good and still not come close to what Saban was.
Saban won 6 national championships at Bama. If this guy wins one, he will be considered a success.

1.Sark
2.Lanning
3. DeBoer

Yep. Their fans can try to spin it all they want, but everyone knows Lanning was their top choice.

A program goes stale if it doesn't go a different direction.
It's what LSU did, it takes time.

Good one. Nice try. 7/10.

Les Miles is a very low bar. LMAO. Les Miles.
Posted on 1/13/24 at 7:28 am to FulshearTexasTiger
Nah. Those mfers settled for Wes Miles.

Sacrificial lamb that will have Saban’s shadow over his shoulder the entire time considering he’ll still be in the building.
Always said the same thing. 1st guy will NOT live up to the standard, practically impossible (and WHO in their right mind would want to follow Saban?).
2d guy will be the one brought in 'to restore the program'. Wouldn't surprise me if D. Ryans from Houston or someone like that with a strong Bama connection...

. Did you watch the national championship game? Washington offense looked like Les Miles was calling the plays.
By that logic, if you watched Kelly’s ND teams play against good opponents you wouldn’t hire him. Good for 9 wins and a choke when it mattered.

Well yea, Kirby Smart wasn’t available
Everyone is available it’s just whether or not Bama is a better fit or situation for every coach. With Saban in the building that would run off most every proven or high ego coach which most proven coaches are alpha dogs with an ego. With Saban in the building Bama had to get a young and up n coming rookie.

Saban wanted Sark. The year before TX came up Sark had the chance at another HC gig. Saban asked him not to take it because he wanted him to replace him at some point. When TX came calling he couldn’t say no.

It’s not Saban. That’s a win for us.
Totally agree. A week ago do you think the Gumps would have wanted DeBoer over Saban? Hell no.
Noone is as a good as Nick, except maybe Kirby, so this is good for us.
