You have to take into account what coach P was taking over. He made tremendous improvements to bad defenses.

He's a great xo guy and with this talent would be outstanding.

Shoop is good but not sure how realistic that is.

Based on the stats you gave, seems to me Bob Shoop looks to be one of the best options, considering he earned his stripes at Vanderbilt and Penn State. Coached some great defensive against top teams for a while now.

I know the rap might be recruiting, but seems to me he did just fine at Vanderbilt, not exactly the Mecca of college football.

My order.

Take into account that Venables coaches at an ACC school. The worst conference. Could this have inflated his numbers? Just look at what Oregon did to FSU, the conference's best team

They don't play any teams with a good offense. Ranks aren't always what they seem. They played one decent offense this year. NC State

I would agree. But I look at the Arizona state gig as well as his time in cal. He didn't improve much. Not like some of these other guys have. Look at Shoop. He was co defensive coordinator at Vandy. Their defense far exceeded the recruited talent. He went to Penn state and he has better talent to start with and gets even better rankings. I haven't seen that trend in CP. I Could be wrong. May be looking in the wrong spot.

This speaks to a Coach getting the job done across two great conferences, SEC and Big Ten.

I get he probably will stay north, but I definitely see why he would be in the mix.

I'm just not sure if I want Venables over Pendergast. I favor Pendergast (whether Ed comes with him or not) if it comes down to these two.

The same Venables that gave up 70 points to WV? He couldn't tstop the spread at all. Pendergast owns the spread. Venables has the luxury of playing average teams

Venables is out of the question IMO.

Coach P is our best option.
With the "shake up" with the 49ers I can't help but wonder about Ed Donatell.

His CFB stats will look like crap because of the Huskies season, but he has the NFL pedigree and has a decent reputation.

I wouldn't doubt if Harbaugh is looking at him in some capacity (DB coach most likely).

Worth noting it's in LSU's best interest to find a DC with DL and/or LB position coaching experience, which Donatell doesn't have.

that was Steele by the way. Venables replaced him after that fiasco.

No. That was Steele's defense that gave up 70. Venables came in the next season.

EDIT: I20goon beat me to it.

Just going off of what someone posted to me , that Venables was there from 2011- present. If so, he was there at the 2012 Orange bowl

Venables takes over for Kevin Steele, who will not return to the Tigers after they gave up 70 to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl.
