A little over 24 hours later, frustration sets in. The rants of a ranter

I love Les Miles. He's a top 5 coach, no doubt. 13-1 and SEC champs is a special fricking year.

But man, the preparation, the game time adjustments, the overall flow of the offense left much to be desired. I understand that the staff knew there was no chance we pound Bama like we have every other team and i definitely understand the need to get to the edge with the option attack. Now, i did miss basically the entire second quarter due to a medical family emergency, but did we ever run the option from under center?
Did we ever attempt any zone reads?

The most frustrating thing for me was the adjustments. After failing to get to the edge with the speed option out of the gun. It didn't work. Bama's OLB and Safety were reading and filling it perfectly. Now, a good option team(Ga Tech, Air Force, Navy, etc) would adjust and have a new pitch man. we didn't. it was as simple as lining up in the trips with back offset to the weak side, and fast motioning D. Peterson over to cut that OLB, or coming out in a 2 back shotgun set and using a lead blocker.

I'm frustrated that we didn't compliment the outside speed option with some QB power plays, using the backside guard to seal the inside, the running back to lead in the whole with Jefferson behind him. If we were gonna spread Bama out, we could have attacked with much more versatile ways. We could have used inside zone reads using jet sweeps to shep and using the running back to be a lead blocker if JJ gave the ball up.

The fact of the matter is, we got outcoached, outplayed, & out hustled. Maybe Les was expecting Saban to play it close to the vest like the first meeting. Maybe the staff just had an off night.

Either way, it sucks that the seniors had to go out like this. No need to relish in the past. This team will work so hard in the offseason. They've experienced what its like to be at the top of the world and have it yanked out from under you, and they won't let it happen again.

I think we did once or twice, with no success. JJ can't run the option very well to begin with and since bama was ready for it, it sucked even more.

That is too complicated for our offense.

I am still be side myself. We were on the cusp of greatness, something truly special, and we laid a dinosaur turd on the field

It looked like the packers playing a high school team

Flipped it on ESPN to try to catch the end of the Ohio State/Indiana bball game but I missed it and caught Sportscenter instead, surprisingly the run-down didn't have a thing about Bama

How would you grade Jefferson's game?

Will be months before I venture over there again, or any sports centric media.

good analysis of our failure to successfully adjust and execute the option.

What is your opinion on not trying to go vertical or give Lee a shot? We tried to consecutive vertical plays. JJ overshot OBJ on the first and hit him on the second for a 1st down. He was open both times and it looked like we might get something going. Then we went back to running (and punting).

Worse than F. What's lower than Z? Even worse than Alpha? It's like the hurricane naming system. I guess I'll go with Omega.

He had more yards against the vaunted Bama D then he did against UGA. :moralvictoryforateamidontsupport:

we were able to get guys open, but we don't run a complicated passing attack. We use basic routes, rarely have read routes, and basically rely on the run to set up the PA passing attack. I do think that neither Jefferson or Lee would have been effective.

As always a very well thought out, open minded, and unbiased post from you

You are spot on. I've been trying to tell people the same thing for the most part. Best wishes to your family. Hope they get well soon.

Even when we broke tendencies by throwing bubble screens w/ jefferson and a hb mid screen, Bama snuffed it out. They were on a whole nother level last night. I've said in another thread and will say it again, they put on a defensive clinic. Up & coming DC's are gonna watch, dissect, and learn from that film for years to come.

I think Lee would have at least not waited til the receiver was opening instead he would throw before the break (timing patterns). That is also his downfall at times with the picks. JJ has a history of waiting too long and waiting for the receiver to get open before throwing instead of relying on the receiver to make the play and break open.

I'm hoping this changes next year with Mett. We were a passing game away from a title this year.
