Last year?? YES he was that bad.. He was god awful. However that doesn't mean that he wont be exponentially better this year. If the Dline improves then he is more likely to improve.

No shite. I don't think anyone here is suggesting they could do a better job than a successful coach that gets paid millions to do what he does. Just looking for some insight.

You've got over 500 posts. I would think that would mean you've read the rant enough to know that the quoted statement above is obviously false.

Chief thinks he's great, board thinks he's shite...

i think he's somewhere in the middle, but until someone can supplant him, he'll be the starter...

Welter is LSU's version of Scott Shanle.

If someone can beat him out, they will have the job but Welter has played and will start this year because nobody can beat him out.

I simply feel that our best athelete should play inside linebacker. The one we have now doesn't have a nose for the football.

I WANT welter to do well... I just think he's limited on the field. if he's the man for the job, and beckwith can't beat him out, well... i'll just be at a loss for words

Maybe so but guys like Ray Lewis, Dick Butkus, Junior Seau, Patrick Willis, Jack Lambert, and Mike Singletary certainly could change a game.

OK?

You can't just throw a guy out there at MLB just because he's a great athlete if he doesn't know the defense and where to line everyone up, what calls to make, etc.

No hes not that bad of a player. But he was the weak link on the D last year and you dont want your weak link to be the MLB. And we have some backups that are young but have more talent than Welter in Beckwith and LL. And LL got some PT at the MLB spot last year and he looked to be better than Welter when he played. And I know Chavis really likes LL. He has had LL learn and practice at all 3 LB since he got here. Speaks very highly of him as well.

Its Welters spot to lose as of now, but I also think we will be using the other guys at the MLB spot more than we did last year. They are older, more experienced, and hopefully more advanced in the playbook. So I think we see a rotation at the MLB spot.

Speaking of LBs, dont forget about Ronnie Feist. Everyone was very high on him his freshman year, then switched to DE as a sophomore and its just not his natural position, but switched back to LB this spring and led everyone with 14 tackles. Looked really impressive.
