50th Anniversary of a Notorious Night

December 1. 1973
On a freezing cold night in Tulane Stadium, the Tigers fell to the Greenies for the first time in 25 years, 14-0.
I was there.
I am convinced that to this day that remains the biggest game in the history of Tulane football. Bigger than winning American Conference championships and bigger than winning meaningless Cotton Bowl games against a team with no defense.
I consider that the third worst loss in LSU history, behind only the two games that directly cost us national championships, the championship game of 2011 and Tennessee, 1959 when Billy Cannon got screwed out of a 2-point conversion.
I was in high school in 1973 and believe me, losing to Tulane was a big, big deal back then.

My daddy and others have told me how that one stung. I was in Tiger Stadium that rainy night in 1982. Talk about a let down after trouncing FSU.

I was there too. 1982 was the biggest roller coaster ride I could remember. After every big win that year, we followed up with a tie or loss to an inferior opponent and the finale was that heartbreaking one point loss in the Orange bowl to one of the great Nebraska teams.

That ‘73 game was before my time, but my dad told me about it. In ‘86 for Christmas, I got the LSU video “Amazing Tiger Tales”. We watched it Christmas Day and he LITERALLY got up and walked out of the den when the ‘73 Tulane highlights came on. Growing up in the ‘80s, Tulane WAS a very big deal. I was a nervous wreck as an 11yo in ‘87 when they almost knocked us off in the dome. I couldn’t comprehend losing to Tulane.

In 1982 I was 8 years old and I’ve been hooked as a Tiger fan ever since.

I remember....Mac never recovered from how that season ended. If my memory serves correctly he only beat one team that finished the year in the Top 20 over his last 6 seasons.

I think that was the last game umbrellas were allowed in Tiger Stadium. The one I brought in that night didn’t make it through the game in one piece.
RIP umbrella

Absolutely
Denham Springs product - Kelvin Robinson had a decent game for Greenies and longest rush from scrimmage.

I thought the regular season ended around Thanksgiving but now with the OP, I know of several December football games in TS. Not counting 2001 and 2020 when world events pushed the season back, did the regular season occasionally end in early December?

Something about LSU invited to the Orange Bowl and playing Tulane did not work well for us. I think that was 1973 also?

F*cking Reggie Reginelli.

I was there, as well. I did not have a ticket, but my dad gave me $20 to try and get one from a scalper. It was about 5 minutes before kick-off, and this guy needed to dump his tickets, so I bought one for $10. I grew up to be a huge LSU fan, but I was 14 at the time, and to this day, it is the greatest (and loudest) football game that I have ever been to. Foley, Oliveri, etc. were great on that night.

I was in tiger stadium that night too! Tulane players eating oranges with the peeling on I still hate those motherfockers! Any real LSU fan hates the green slime!!!

I was there at the Tulane game in Tiger Stadium the next year and the greenie fans were wearing buttons that said “14-0. Do it again.” We beat them 24-22. Beat them like 42-6 the next year.

remember going to a Saints game after we lost to them in '82, and Tulane fans were wearing T-shirts that read
"3 out of 4 and going for more"
"3 out of 4 and going for more"

I still maintain that Reggie Reginelli crawled the last 3 yds into the end zone for one of the Tulane TDs that night.

What was Tulane stadium like? It looks like it was a good size stadium from the pictures online. How was atmosphere? It’s a shame that stadium with so much history was torn down.
