Really? Why, becuase he died? Nothing Wally did on the field warrants his number being retired at LSU. Walker, Furniss, etc. etc. etc. don't have their numbers retired. They are all time greats with record after record. Why retire Wally's number but not tons of other players who were much better? Wally was a good player. Thats it. You shouldn't just retire somebody's number just because they happen to tragically die young.

Not JUST because he tragically died young, but because he passed while still playing for LSU.

Ok, so your standard would be if a player dies while at LSU, he gets his number retired? So I guess you would support the retirement of Naeshall Menard's number? He was the LSU football player who killed himself his junior year in 1998.

You can't just retire someone's number just because they died young while playing at LSU. You can certainly honor that person in other ways, but number retirement is the ultimate honor saved only for the greatest players in their sport who have very special accomplishments. Wally has not earned that honor.

You're a dickhead. It's an ultimate honor? I bet if you ask any LSU baseball legend, they'd have no problem with Wally Pontiff's number being retired.

that's such a retarded comparison. a coach to a player and talking about "on the field" comparisons.

Alex Box is named after a LSU letterman who died in WWII. No, it isn't his jersey number, but I'd say having his name on the building is nice.

Also, I'd say that it's unfortunate that we never got a chance to see if Wally could have, in your words, "earned" the right to have his number retired.

point is, retiring numbers isnt just for All American players.

Pontiff may not have been an all american like eddy furniss, but i guarantee he touched more lives.

and im not here denying that point. in fact i think Wally deserves all the praise he gets. it's just a really bad comparison. Skip is arguably the best CB Coach of all time.

read the fricking thread. He mentioned because Pontiff wasnt great on the field as a player, he shouldnt have his number retired.

Skip wasn't a fricking player either. HIs number is retired. Its a perfect comparison.

Geez can we stop the BS and just pay respect to Wally and remember him for not only being a Tiger, but for being a good person and someone who had a heart to help other people. The fact that he died so young is too tragic beyond words. Just pay respect to the man, and leave it at that.

WOW really? Are we really going to argue about this? The kids dead, this is a remembrance thread... We don't need to be arguing about how good or bad he was.

Wally is and will always be my favorite Tiger, even before he died... If his number gets retired that would be awesome and I'd have no problem with that, if it doesn't I wouldnt be upset and I'd have no problem with that... I think LSU has done a real nice job remembering him thus far.
