Not good with nuance, I see.

Maybe you could clarify how there is no more pressure to win anything when the coaching staff is pretty much coaching for their jobs from here on out.

Let me re-phrase in the form of a question: exactly which coaches' jobs do you think are in jeopardy if they don't win the West? They gonna fire Coach O because he didn't get the team to pull a complete 180 and win the West after the HC got fired 4 games into the season?

Fired? I doubt it, but I doubt he's given a good look as HC next year if he doesn't. Do you disagree?

And what about the other coaches? You don't think their performance will have an affect on whether or not the new coach in January will retain them or not? It's perfectly plausible for some of the current coaching staff to not be here next year if they don't turn things around. And I really don't see Coach O being looked at as a serious candidate next year if he doesn't win the West.

2. Nothing to lose.

Or maybe no motivation/nothing to play for. This one worries me, especially considering the number of guys we have that will be playing on Sundays.

No, we might call a few different plays, but we won't learn a new offense in one week.

Even moving towards a more uptempo O will help keep a defense on their heels. If fans were constantly PO'd with the chronic late play calls/clock bungling the players had the be chafed to the limit. Gain a little more productivity per play, run more plays, LSU D gets to stay fresher, I don't see the downside. I don't think it is a pipe dream to believe a more productive O is possible with better coaching/game management.

Oh, I don't know...maybe because at this point nobody expects them to win the West? Kind of a big difference in terms of the pressure on your shoulders.

Kind of like Hal Hunter and LSU in '99 against Arkansas. It's not like when DiNardo was fired, anyone was saying to LSU's coaching staff "You better beat Arkansas, or else."

I don't disagree. But he's a well-respected recruiter and football coach at a top-tier SEC school. It's not as if the man is going to be out on the street begging for change if he can't manage to turn it around.

Same as above. Yes, I'm sure there is a sense of urgency, but not pressure. It's not like Major League where there is the chance they are going to find a red tag in their locker on any given day. These are not dumb people. They are aware of the situation and I'm sure are taking whatever necessary actions they need to take in order to mitigate their personal situations.

What OP is saying, I believe, is not that winning the west is not possible; rather, due to the current situation (firing HC and others, season FEELS kind of dumpster fire at least in respect to preseason expectations), there is no extreme PRESSURE to win it. We're not necessarily expecting it. It's not a specific goal anymore. No one's job is dependent on it, either coach or player. This isn't the norm, etc.

there it is. The most predictable stupid theory that always pops up in the mid part of a season. "Nothing to lose" is meaningless and even if it were real, "nothing to lose" does not make the team any more talented or focused or smarter.

do you even follow sports? You don't think a talented team with nothing to lose is dangerous?

Here's a good example: a team has the ball down 10 points with only a few minutes left. Why do you think we often see those team drive down the field and score?

Yes, I realize a part of it might be a softer defense, but the majority of the reason is that the trailing team has "nothing to lose" so they can be more risky with play calling and their QB knows he has to let 'er rip. Interceptions don't hurt, because they're about to lose anyway, so let it fly. And it often works.

Nothing to lose, right there.

1. Stadium will rock the rest of the year especially if corporate sold their tickets go to true fans.
2. Coach O's pregame speeches will lead us to victory over Florida, Bama and Arky.
3. Passion, freakin' PASSION!!!!!!
4. Pete Jenkins (we just got better).

You must be really stupid to persist in this nonsense...

Harris can not run "Zone read"...he can not make the read apparently

All of"zone read" look plays where pre-determined to either keep or hand-off

You want to see what a true "zone read" quarterback can do...watch a little Lamar Jackson... Who as a true freshman in his first game displayed how this is done.....Harris...into his junior year...is still "Jamarcus Russell" limited to 7 plays... :rotflmao:

Fortunately they don't have to learn a new offense. Mizzou is in for a beating.

Just thinking about a trick play here in practice against starters on LSU D so don't hammer me. Here is a play I would like to see.

-LF and Guice lined in up in the backfield with Chark on the wide far side with Dupre as a slot on the opposite side. (Defense will stack the box thinking sure run. LSU has been playing Chark in the slot lately so the other team will think he is a decoy.)
-TE on the line on Dupre's side.
-Hike. O line goes to Dupre's side. Hand off to Guice toss to LF. TE does lead blocking with Guice being fast enough to support block/pass protect. LF can option pass to Chark depending on how the run stop looks to him.
-If Dupre can see there is enough protection for LF to throw, he can slip out for a pass too.

I think LF's pass to Chark in the AU game was pretty good but he needed to put just a little more air on it. Unlike the AU game, LF will have to throw to the left across his body to throw to Chark but he can still run it or he may be able to throw to Dupre (for at least a short gain).

Worth a try in practice at least and depending on how an elite LSU D responds to try it if the play goes as planned.

I know it is hard to see in text but like I said worth a try in practice to see how our D reacts and coaches can decide from there.

Bump to re-visit and to admit that I was pulling for Mizzou to hold the Tigers to a FG on that last scoring drive

Here's to hoping I'm right and that the Tigers continue to roll

There would be plenty to lose. Things are still on the table for LSU to take. The timing of the firing was strategic not knee-jersey like so many pundits would have you believe. Installing a new staff and letting them gel at a lighter point in the schedule prior to the gauntlet in November. There is plenty to play for!

I think some are misinterpreting my "nothing to lose" logic.

I didn't mean that LSU literally has nothing to lose. I meant that, given the 2-2 start and Miles' firing, that nobody expects LSU to live up to their preseason expectations anymore, which was to challenge for the SEC title and a playoff berth.

Of course the goals are still on the table.
