All time? No. This season? Probably
The awards also prove that POY is a "team" award. Simmons is averaging 3 more ppg; 9 more rpg; 1 more spg and shooting 14 % point higher than Ulis. The only spot where Ulis has Simmons beat is in assist per game, by 2.
Simmons is the ONLY SEC player averaging a double-double. In fact, he's putting up combined points and rebound numbers that haven't been seen in the SEC in at least 20 years, if not longer. If you look at his points/assists/rebounds, he's put up combined numbers that may have never been seen in the SEC. Yet, he for whatever asinine reason takes a large share of the blame for LSU's team struggles.
If he played for UK or even just a competent D-I HC (instead of the AAU coach he plays for now), everyone would be fawning over his historic season. Unfortunately, we have to get daily threads talking about how "overrated" he is or that he "didn't live up to the (ridiculous) hype".

You must have missed this

Simmons is the only 6'10 player I've ever seen that slaps at the ball instead of defending the rim.

Agreed. I mean they were picked fourth in the conference. That's unfortunately where they finished.

I can't believe we don't have anyone on the all-defensive team

There needs to be a recount. JJ not getting SEC Coach of the Year has to be a mistake......

Simmons was never billed as a shot-blocker, so I can't understand why people are angry that he, in fact, wasn't a shot blocker. Jarrel Martin is the same height as Simmons, yet Simmons averaged more blocks per game than Martin did last season. So if Simmons is the ONLY 6'10" player you ever saw that didn't defend the rim, then you must not have watched Martin last season.
LSU's TEAM defense was as bad as it gets this season, and just about every metric bears that out. Was Simmons an all-world defender? Probably not. His biggest struggles were in help defense. However, EVERYONE on LSU's team struggled in that department. They have for four years under Jones except one guy, Jordan Mickey, who was also the best pure-shot blocker since Shaq. He covered up a TON of bad play around him.
There were plenty of times where he made great defensive plays that went unrecorded in the box scores. A switch on a much smaller guard to cut a driving lane off. Standing tall underneath to effect a shot at the rim without fouling; Baiting poor in-bounds passes, then deflecting them for steals.
Simmons gets a ridiculous amount of criticism because he didn't block shots AND make 3's. Yet, people fail to realize that in ONE season:
He averaged more PPG than any LSU player in the last 20 years except Marcus Thornton
He averaged more RPG than any LSU player since Shaq in 1992 (24 years)
He averaged more APG than any LSU player since Randy Livingston in 1996 (20 years)
