What are the thoughts on LSU being a legit NC contender for next year?

Many people including myself stated this prior to the season. LSU will have depth and upperclassman at almost every position, along with talented freshmen to back them up and see some playing time.

I think we are losing some great players but we have a lot of experience coming back. It will be a strong team that will contend for the SEC.

Leadership will be the key!
Who replaces the leadership of Nevis, Sheppard, Peterson and Jasper.

Replacing Sheppard will be the hardest thing in my opinion. Nevis finally turned it on this year and LSU ha plenty of talented corners to step in for Peterson. Sheppard however is the true leader of that defense.

I think the difficulty of our away schedule combined with losing Nevis, Sheppard, and Peterson makes a NC very unlikely.

I actually think the national championship game will be played in Tuscaloosa next November between LSU and the gumps.

winning the NC every 4 years will work for me, as long as we don't have 4 loss seasons in between.

It will be difficult

First of all, we lose the core of our defense (Nevis, PP, Sheppard).

Second of all, Chavis can't defend read option/motion offenses and we face a potent read option/motion offense in the opening game at a nuetral site (Oregon very well may be the defending national champions).

Third, our schedule is brutal. As noted, we play Oregon to begin the season. Then we have to play an away game in Morgantown against WVU. We have to travel to Knoxville to play a an improving Tennessee team that we barely beat this year and Starkville to play a rapidly improving Bulldog team. Keep in mind we barely escaped Cowbell territory with a win the last time we visited. And of course, we have to play in Tuscaloosa against a Bama team that should be ranked in the Top 5-10. Meanwhile, we have our standard titantic battle with Florda in Tiger Stadium and a challenging contest with Ark to close the season.

All of that being said, will I enter next season with high expectations? Of course. I hope the offense matures and can carry us. Personally, I only care that we win the SEC, since an NC depends partially upon circumstances outside of our control.

Miles still the HC? All signs point to no.

I like the talent and experience we have coming back, but the schedule is brutal. Hopefully we make it through without a loss or two, but it will be tough.

A few weeks ago I would have agreed with you but now I am so baffled by our coach. Another fan here says he is an evil genius that not only screws up the minds of the opposition but equally does so with us.

Not sure about their OL and Defense, but LaMichael James, their heisman candidate at RB, and their starting QB are sophmores.

How we replace the losses on Defense will determine that. I think our defensive line will be better, but losing Sheppard will be huge. Also will JJ keep getting better or will he take 10 games for the light bulb to go off again?
