Nobody cares what you think about the passing of the number dude. No person ever asked your opinion in that perspective. Its a honor for the player to get it. Scouts in yhe NFL see that it is a sign of maturity and leadership.

Its not arbitrary. It is a number that is close to other teams wearing a C on their jersey. Hester was the definition of a hardworking player that established his name with effort and discipline, and Mauck happened to also possess those qualities. It has become an honor to wear it, and that guy is one if our leaders.

So no, its not arbitrary, I think definitely started with Hester, and it signifies leadership. I don't really get why it bugs people, the intention is pretty obvious.

My point is that we (LSU) have now made the #18 some iconic number at LSU. I actually enjoy the idea of handing down a special number for all the reasons you suggest...just disagree that number should have been #18.

Mauck was a solid player and a good guy. So was Hester. But does that suddenly make that number so iconic that it deserves to be preserved above all other in terms of relating it to leadership?

I get that there are a TON of LSU fans that seem to think the sun rose and set on Jacob Hester, so I'm sure that is part of the lore for them. I'm just not one of them. Good player, seemingly a good guy. Fun to watch in 2007.

I'm of the mind that when you choose a number to hand down like this, the player should have done something extraordinary or the player is associated with some tragedy and handing the number down to a deserving player is a way to honor the former player.

The mileage of others clearly varies...

I guess we just disagree on how big a deal it is. I just see it as an honor for a senior leader to wear, usually someone that wasnt a freshmen sensation. So, in my eyes it is almost for an unheralded player, therfore would not be appropriate for a superstar to wear.

#7 on the other hand, has developed into the unofficial label as the teams most talented player.

Just my take.

And your point has nothing to do with the original post of the thread. As said before, its a symbol of leadership and hard workmanship.

WTF? His point has everything to do with the original post of the thread. You just don't agree with his opinion.

This thread is about the number 18. He doesn’t have a problem with the tradition of awarding a player with a number that holds special significance. He merely questions the choice of the number: 18. Why 18?

I actually think it was one of the more brilliant moves by Miles. The “tradition” could have caused serious problems until Miles co-opted the whole thing. Honestly, it was a brilliant move by Miles to appropriate an idea that could have sowed dissension and turn it to his advantage.

Traditions have to start somewhere. Why shouldn't they have started with the solid play of some very good players?

Sorry dude if you could read it has about ten pictures and two dozens lines of text about #18. There is only one line of text which asks what we think Magee will put up. And why are we asked? Because he's #18 this year.

You don't think this thread is about the tradition of #18? Hell, look at the title.

So this thread is not about the tradition of #18?

Some of you fans are miserable downers.

I think it's great to find a way to honor players who work hard.

I think #18 is a waste of time and it does not make a bit of difference. I would want to keep MY NUMBER How does changing the number on your shirt make a difference how talented or how hard you run and hit? It does not!!! Period However, if it makes the players feel better then it is fine. Just don't need Dandy's son or others making a big deal out of it and I feel it needs no press...

Seems like a whole lot of mad right there....So are you against captain's bands and patches?

Team leaders have been singled out via their uniform before "18" you know....do you hate them all or what?
