What am I missing here? Commitments are non binding. Recruits flip, decommit, recommit, string out announcing commitments. Like professional sports with the draft, why not just have national signing day be the day and be done with commitments.

For every high-profile guy that strings their recruitment along to NSD, there are five middle-of-the-road guys that need to commit early to save their spot.

It doesn't take a lot of thinking to realize that is a very stupid idea. Can you imagine going into nsd not knowing if you'll get 15 or 30 committments? Most commits honor their commitments. A few actually have a change of heart. These frustrate you when they decommit from your team, and they delight you when they switch to your team. Still others pretend to decommit so they can enjoy the attention, and budgets, of other teams. Often they, and the coaches, understand that the commitment, though secret, is still in effect.

Some are more solid than others. Just like some offers are more sincere than others. (See "non-committable offer" and stuff like that.)

These things are extremely fluid and complicated. Best to think of it in shades of grey and not B/W.

ok. So let's just shut it all down. Whoever shows up in August is on the team.

Works for me.

Why does some high school youngster get you all rilled up by changing his mind???? months out from when it really matters???

Why?

That's pretty much what is. At this stage in the game commitment is just a declaration of intent--sort of like a marriage proposal. If you change your mind, you're not married.

But we have different words for this situation you say. Well that's true, but in this case we don't. It's just the way things evolved. Some have tried to introduce different terms, but commitment is just too deeply ingrained.

How will we deal with this? Well, how do you deal with a word like "lead?" Pronounced "leed," it generally means to go first, to guide, to influence, etc. Pronounced "led," it can mean a heavy metal or a graphite pencil. Same word spelling with different pronunciations and really different meanings. We deal with this through context. Deal with commitment in the same way. It's not that hard.

why not let people sign when they are ready?

remove all the drama.

no verbals, no hints. no twitter lists.

if you are ready, you sign and you get 5 years to play 4. Period.
no processing. no take backs.

A teenager changes his mind. This is unacceptable.

Wouldn't work at all...What about the guys who commit, sign and transfer after one year should they make them stay??? People minds change at the end of the day let that kid do what makes them happy commit and decommit to a different school every month for all I care.

It allows teams to get a good grasp on their numbers and what they still need. Allows the non top players to choose a big school and keep their spot. Unless it's with bama

They need an early signing period.

But things change, coaches move on, this at least let's the season play out and any aftermath after with coaching changes and the coaches themselves have a better idea of the numbers in February.

Now guys like Kevin tolliver should be allowed an early signing period so they can just move on with their lives.

I don't know why they could not make the commitment more formal. For example, have a form that is signed by the student-athlete and/or his parents announcing his commitment to a given school. As part of that commitment, the student-athlete gives up any remaining official visits other than to the school to which he is committing. In return, the school must guarantee him a scholarship.

I think kids taking official visits to schools where they know they will not be attending is a waste of every one's time and money. This would eliminate some of this as well as recruiting other players to your school while on another campus.

I hate when committed players change their minds at the last minute, but I find it more despicable when the coach pulls an offer just prior to signing day and leaves the player with very few options.

My plan would eliminate these and allow the coaches to focus on other players and let the student-athlete end the recruiting process.

Although the current system has its flaws, it works well enough that total reform would be more likely to create more problems than solve current ones.

What about a late bloomer like Sci Martin? Should we be asking 16 year old kids to make life altering decisions before it's absolutely necessary? In Sci's case, should he have to weigh the pros and cons of locking into a Tulane spot when he still has another season to play?
