Uh... no? Just people not understanding how the rankings work.
We couldn't have been a top 5 class with 10 less players committed than other top teams.

If surprise players like Okeke, Weathersby, Key, and Dillon didn't pull the trigger along with guys that we weren't 100% on like Johnson and Jackson, this class would not have been top 10. You obviously replace them with other guys, but it wouldn't be near the level of talent coming in. Coaches did work to close on this class and get us in the top 10. It certainly was no guarantee to be in the top 10.

True, but we did have fewer commits and were therefore looking poor in comparison. You have no secret knowledge of the ranking systems.
The strong finish is a bit surprising and I think it reflects well on the recruiting team in place now and bodes very well for the future.

You're 100% on point. Not sure why people are acting like it was just a waiting game, most of the guys that signed with us were leaning elsewhere at some point IMO. It wasn't as simple as having low numbers but having a ton of silent commits like most years, people were worried this year because we had low numbers AND it was looking like we were going to miss on a lot of our top choices

Eh, I like the class. I don't love it. It's top heavy for sure. Ranked that high with a deep snapper, punter, fullback, the second half of a package deal, and project QB is impressive

Best Oline haul I've ever seen. But to not get at least one LB is beyond comprehension. Take a look at 2016, pretty much Garret and thats it, Voorhies can probably play on the outside but then what, JUCO and Freshmen.

leave it to the recruiting board regulars to turn what was supposed to be a positive thread about an unexpectedly great finish into a dick measuring contest about who was the most sure about us finishing top 5. Do less

everytime someone posted a freak out thread about not finishing in the top 10, plenty of people told them that LSU would finish top 10
not many thought we could finish top 5 however
so unless you consider a top 10 class a "bust", this thread is unwarranted

Please link to a thread where one "chicken little" posted a freak out thread and the majority of people were sure about us finishing top 10 in December. I read the recruiting board every day and that never happened.
And to answer your question, barely cracking the top 10 this year would've only gotten us to 5th or 6th in the SEC which would've been a huge disappointment. Give the coaches their credit and move on, nobody cares to see you and your buddies pretend that y'all were 100% sure that a top 10 finish was imminent in December
