CBK seems to like the guys he has. If he takes a transfer the risk is one of our guys will jump into the portal in the spring or decommit. While some of the Bama players are certainly studs the balance and risk is taking a 1-2 year proven guy but losing a 4 year guy we feel good about. We should know our guys really well by now. The best route is the long term 3 year starter so in CBK I trust.

I understand that thought process, but we have got to get some interior defensive linemen on this team for next year. We have virtually no experience returning that position.

The absolute worst thing you can do with this portal situation is go out and buy (NIL) a player for more than you are paying the current roster. Once you do that you will have a lot of unrest on your hands.

Money is a value metric when one compares self to others. If you have an important player that has been here the last 1-2 yrs and you bring in another player of even equal value/need for more NIL the existing players will become instantly dissatisfied because they either feel undervalued or neglected by the staff. I think some of this happened at Ole Miss earlier this month. You had guys coming in with a lot of fanfare and then you started getting the unexpected portal jumpers.

I’m not sure Kelly worries about kids leaving. He’s just not going to break the bank on players. Some of the kids in the portal are strictly about money. He’s not playing that.

You have to be strategic about kids leaving also. If CBK brings in a 1-yr transfer CB and Toviano gets less playing time he would be a transfer possibility. Then LSU would need even more transfer help going into the all important 2025 season.

Kelly has always said he is going to fill this roster through recruiting and use the portal to top off the tank. We were portal heavy the first two years out of necessity. That's not the case anymore. It's highly likely we only take 3-4 a year now and that'll be due to transfers out. It already seems like he has a checklist for portal adds and bag chasers are not welcome. It's usually guys from Louisiana that LSU missed on evals that will provide leadership to the locker room.

Agree with this and while everyone is talking about how dominant teams that have shelled out crazy money to rack up on the transfers will be, I’m going to watch that gumbo cook, simmer, and get served, before I comment on how well the ingredients compliment each other. Got a feeling a bunch of nastiness is going to come to the surface as things begin to boil.

And if it all gels together perfectly, it's a one year band-aid and then you have to start thr roux all over again and hope you succeed again.

The thing about the portal is, you better freakn win with those guys or you gonna pay in multiple ways and it can be an all in type moment as a coach.

If you lose that hand, players can leave, they can ask for more, they can leave for more, they can go to the NFL, they can get injured and they definitely not playing 110% after you lose the teams confidence or they don’t feel like they have anything to play for. Winning a big bowl game at 9-3? Forget it, not gonna happen. You better be have players you can develop behind them because you can go from championship conversations to a losing season quickly.

Very insightful post that I haven't seen discussed much, i.e., players start protecting themselves in-season because if they get hurt they diminish their portal value/options.

CFB is becoming a strange sports species.

I know BK wants to win now, but I think he's looking for the program stability long term, especially with Underwood coming in... With that said, at least one starting type DT would be a good thing.
